Somes Rides 100 Miles for
Reach the Beach
Williams, Rablin Get Married
Congratulations to Casey Rablin and Melissa Williams on their wedding held May
14 on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The wedding was officiated by the bride’s mother,
Rebecca Williams, and the maid of honor was her sister, Penny Williams.
The best man was Eddie Rablin, the groom’s brother. The bride was walked down
the “sand" isle by her father, Michael Williams.
The bride is a Siletz Tribal member and the granddaughter of Roy A. Downey Jr.
and Mary Jean (Speakman) King.

An annual charity fund-raising event
for the American Lung Association,
Reach the Beach, took place May 16.
Volunteers from as far away as Northern
California spent the day riding bikes from
Portland to Pacific City, Ore.
Three of the volunteers were my son
and Tribal member Syd Somes (left),
my nephew Mark Soulier (right, married
to Cindy DePoe) and his brother Ross
(middle, from California).
The volunteers collect donations for
every mile they bike. This year was their
second in participating in this event. I
am very proud that my children and our
relations are active in volunteering their
time and energy to help support non­
profit organizations such as the American
Lung Association.
They are carrying on a tradition
handed down from our ancestors, the gift
of giving. Our family is truly blessed with
the younger generations who have shown
us time and time again, volunteering to
give is a gift that keeps on giving.
Thank you Syd, Mark and Ross - you
are an inspiration to our community. And
son, I know Dad is proud of you, too!
Chef de Cuisine Jack Strong
Jack Strong brings nearly 20 years
of experience in the culinary industry
to the position of chef de cuisine of The
Dining Room at Salish Lodge & Spa.
Hailing from Siletz, Ore., Strong's Na­
tive American heritage plays a strong
role in his culinary philosophy. He takes
pride in leveraging the farm-fresh, native
ingredients of the region to develop his
indigenous Northwest cuisine.
Strong most recently excelled as chef
de cuisine at the AAA Five Diamond and
Mobil Five-Star rated Kai Restaurant in
Chandler, Ariz., and his previous experi­
ence includes sous chef at Windows on
the Green at The Phoenician in Scottsdale,
Ariz., and eight years at Adam s Place Restaurant in Eugene, Ore.
Strong is a graduate of the culinary program at Lane Community College in
Eugene, Ore. In 2008 he was nominated for the James Beard Award long list “Best
Chef: Southwest.”

Marcos Muniz-Strong and Aleatha (Levi)
Simmons are proud to announce the birth
of their son, Jaysiah Muniz-Strong, bom
April 21, 2009.
He weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and
was 1934 inches long.
