TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Tribal Member Selected for Elite All-Star Baseball Team High School Junior Tristan “T-Man” Metcalf Will Play 41 Games in 45 Days with College Team by Brent Merrill Siletz Tribal member Tristan Metcalf has been selected to participate on an elite traveling all-star baseball team that will play 41 games in 10 states in a little less than two months. Metcalf is the only high school player chosen for the team that will feature col lege all-star players known as the Alaska Gold Panners. He leaves to join the team via airplane on June 6 and is set to return home right after pow-wow on Aug. 15. "I’m so excited to get this opportu nity,” said Metcalf - known locally as “T-Man.” The coach of the all-star team is Jim Deitz. “We are so proud of T-Man,” said mom Jenifer Metcalf when sharing the news of Tristan’s accomplishment. “We are doing everything we can to support T-Man as he continues to excel in sports and in his grades.” Family, friends and Tribal staffers have been raising donations to help the family cover T-Man’s traveling expenses, including the cost for airfare. To make a donation, contact Chuvonne Metcalf, Willie Metcalf or Jenifer Metcalf through the Tribal offices. Tribal Health Director Judy Muschamp was the first person to donate to Metcalf’s expense fund. Metcalf currently stars as a starting varsity shortstop for the Newport High School Cubs and also starts for the bas ketball team and for the football team as a running back and kick returner. Some of Metcalf’s highlights for the Cubs included scoring 10 points in a bas ketball game in January against Central High School; scoring a game-winning basket against Estacada High School on Jan. 6 in overtime; scoring 12 points - including a late-game basket - against Taft High School on Jan. 9; getting two hits, including a home run to Centerfield, against Astoria on April 4; and hitting two grand slam home runs in back-to-back in nings against Philomath on April 11. Metcalf was part of a state champion ship varsity baseball squad at Newport last season as a sophomore. Metcalf started as a shortstop and finish the 2008 season as the first-team all- Val-Co league shortstop and third-team all-state shortstop. He started the season batting in the second half of the order, but his bat skills moved him up into the number two spot in the order by the end of the season. Metcalf finished the 2008 baseball season hitting .448 and had no errors in the team’s four playoff games. Metcalf completed the 2008 football season by being honored four times on the all-Val-Co League teams. Metcalf carried the ball 47 times in 2008 for 539 yards rushing and had three catches for 110 yards while totaling nine touchdowns in league play. Metcalf was named to the Val-Co League’s first team as a running back, defensive back, kick returner and punter. He also was recognized by the state all star teams when he was named honorable mention all-state running back, defensive back and punter. In Newport’s playoff game against Tillamook last November, Metcalf ran the ball 11 times for 101 yards (including a touchdown), caught two passes for 74 yards, totaled 61 yards on punt returns, ran a kickoff back 80 yards for a touchdown and ran for another 50 yards after ripping the ball away on defense. He scored four touchdowns in that game. Metcalf was just named co-Most Valuable Player in the Val-Co league for the 2009 varsity baseball season along with teammate Cody Dordan. Newport High School finished the season 10-2 in league play and made the state baseball playoffs again this year. Metcalf, who just completed his junior year in high school, was named a first-team all-league infielder and batted .526 for the season. He hit five home runs, had five doubles, nine stolen bases, 20 runs batted in and 21 runs scored. Butler is Outstanding Athlete Alton Gregory Butler - “Greg” - at 5 feet 8 inches tall showed his true war rior spirit (or as one sports announcer put it, he was the smallest player on court and played like he was a 6 foot 5) and has been selected to play in an all-star classic June 19 at Morse Event Cen ter at the Northwest Christian University campus in Eugene and June 20 at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City. Game time for each event is 3:15 p.m. Greg was the start ing point guard who averaged 14.5 points in the state playoffs, lead ing his team to a sixth place finish after losing to a tough (defending state champions) Regis team at the 3A level. Greg was chosen Qwest player of the game in two of the state playoff games. Greg also was an honorable mention in the tough West Valley League. Sheridan was co-league champion with Horizon Christian, which played Cascade Christian for the state championship. Greg is a senior at Sheridan High School, made player of the week twice this year and shared the most valuable player award with Niko Rentch. Greg also was nominated for player of the week in the Salem Statesman Journal for his outstanding performance against Coquille in the first round of the state playoffs. Upholding a family tradition, he also plays baseball and he earned player of the week honors last year for his outstanding performance against the Colton baseball team. After graduating high school, Greg plans to go to Ventura College in California. Greg s parents are Alton and Donna Butler of Sheridan. His grandparents were Alton (Nat) Butler and Lois (Leno) Butler.
