TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Take Advantage of New Siletz Saves! IDA Program Council to Consider New Ordinance Comments Sought from Tribal Members by Yvonne Messmer The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians announced April 7 that it is launching a new matched savings program called the Siletz Saves! IDA Program (SSIP) for low-income Tribal members. The pilot program will be based in the Salem Area Office. Participants in the Siletz Saves! Program make regular deposits into a special savings account called an individual development account or IDA. The amount saved is then matched $3 for every $1 saved - a 300 percent return! Participants are required to save for at least six months up to three years and to attend financial fitness classes in Salem. The object of the IDA is to teach participants how and why they should save and then allow them to use their savings for the pur chase of their first home. Come to the orientation meeting at the Salem Area Office on May 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to find out what it is all about. Light snacks will be available. Mark July 14-16 for Culture Camp by Selene Rilatos, Cultural Programs Coordinator Culture Camp will be held July 14-16 at the Tribal Community Center/Government Hill in Siletz. Camp is for Tribal members and Tribal families only; children under age 10 must be chaperoned by an adult. The Camp Planning Committee is looking for volunteers to teach classes of cultural traditional nature and arts. We also are having an art contest for a new logo for the camp T-shirt. The Tribe has just introduced a new ordinance, the Transient Lodging Tax Ordi nance, which primarily will govern room taxes at Chinook Winds Resort. The Tribe has agreed to continue the transient lodging taxes at Chinook Winds that were previ ously imposed by State and local law as part of our Municipal Services Agreement with Lincoln City. The ordinance as drafted would apply equally to all temporary lodging on Tribal properties, including the RV parks in Lincoln City and Salem. This ordinance is available for Tribal member viewing on the Tribe’s website - www.ctsi.nsn.us - under the Tribal Member Only section. Before the Tribal Council discusses this proposed ordinance and considers it for passage, it asks for the com ments of Tribal members. Comments can be sent, in writing, to Tribal Council. Apply Now for Tribal Head Start Applications are now available for the Siletz Tribal Head Start program for the 2009-2010 school year. In addition to an application, parents also will be asked to fill out a family needs assessment and a health summary for their child. Campers for this year’s Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow on Aug. 7-9 are taken on a first- come, first-served basis. There will be a $25 camping/garbage fee per campsite with one vehicle per campsite. If you have additional vehicles or cannot park your vehicle at your camp site, you will need to park at one of our parking lots off of the pow-wow grounds. Please keep pets off of the pow-wow grounds and on a leash at all times. Camper registration forms and fees will be collected on site. Cut Wood for the Elders Day The Tribal Natural Resources Com mittee and Natural Resources Department will sponsor another “Cut Wood for the Elders Day on May 9. The woodcut will be held at the old log yard at the Tribe's Toledo Mill property. We need lots of volunteers to help split firewood for Tribal elders. Bring your hydraulic wood splitters, splitting mauls, axes and lots of energy. Even if you don t have any of those, we can use the moral support! Lunch, drinks and snacks will be pro vided. We will meet at the Tribal admin istration building at 8 a.m. and caravan to the mill. For anyone wishing to come later, directions to the mill will be posted on the front door of the building. The goal of this event will be to stockpile firewood for future delivery to elders. Elders'Coordinator Danise Barker maintains a list of elders who burn wood for their winter heat. People willing to haul firewood to el ders outside of the Siletz area should con tact Danise at 800-922-1399, ext. 1225, or 541 -444-8225 and she will pair you up with an elder in need. We especially need folks who can haul wood to the Eugene, Salem and Portland areas. If you have parents or grandparents who bum wood in the winter to stay warm, you need to help out at this event!
