TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Native Internship/Career Fair a Success Why Internships? by Katy Kaady by Katy Kaady On March 5, Native students, graduates and those seeking jobs and career informa tion journeyed from as far away as Eugene to Portland State University for the PSU and Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians first Native Internship, Career and Job Fair. Résumés were given to employers who in turn gave counsel and applications for summer internships and scholarship opportunities, as did PSU’s School of Business and its Career Center; and the OHSU multi-cultural program shared information with students. Representatives from Nike, Safeway, Intel, N1CWA, NAYA and the State of Oregon also were present. A few of this summer’s available internships include many federal programs, such as the Bonneville Power Administration, U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior. For more information about paid internships and summer hire programs as well as jobs, go to www.usajobs.gov. Many companies also offer summer hire programs for students, such as PGE. Test Fee Program Grant Funded The Oregon Department of Education has received notice from the U.S. Depart ment of Education that the Oregon Test Fee Program proposal has been funded for the 2008-2009 school year. This program pays the advanced placement and international baccalaureate examination fees for income-qualified students. Why do an internship? • • • Experience to put on your resume Contact with area employers Earn money for school • • • Many internships lead to job offers and future scholarships To decide if you’re in the right major Many businesses begin to recruit future employees through internship programs When should 1 start my first internship? It s generally a good idea to take at least the core 300-level class in your chosen field before you begin applying for an internship program. That way, you will know the basics and be able to talk about the field in an interview situation. Each position has different requirements, though, so be sure to carefully read what the employer is looking for. How do I find out about internship opportunities? Contact your school s career and/or program major center. Join professional groups at school. Begin searching internship opportunities on the Web - Google “internship.” Are my grades important to obtain an internship? In many cases, applications are taken online for internship opportunities and can include certain GPA requirements. Your GPA will be weighed in the decision process. The better your GPA, the better your chances.
