CHINOOKWINDS CASINO RESORT Chinook Winds Gives in the Spirit of the Season Sharing with others is a time-honored tradition al the very heart of the Tribal culture of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, owners of Chinook Winds Casino Resort. This philosophy is put into practice within the local community. Although ac cording to Tribal custom it is unseemly to be boastful, at this time of year it's good for people to know that the spirit of the season is alive and well, especially during these hard economic times. Every December, the casino and its associated properties participate in “giv ing” activities that help provide for those in need within the community. This year was no different. In conjunction with the North Lincoln Fire & Rescue Volunteer Christmas Toy Drive, the Chinook Winds Bingo Depart ment collected toys for children of the community. According to Bingo Manager Chad McCormick, “The response of the staff and our guests has been tremendous. This year’s contribution may well be the largest we have ever seen!” A giving tree could be found near the entrance to the Bingo Hall in the casino and another in the lobby of the administra tive offices. As in years past, all of the 103 tags on these trees listing needed items for families and foster children of the area were filled in time for the holidays. They collected 144 toys. who attend high school, and the Lincoln County Department of Human Services provided tags to be filled for children who are under its supervision. Names were kept confidential with only the age and gender or the need listed on the tags. Not just limited to the staff, members of the community were invited to partici pate in making the holidays brighter for a child or a family by selecting a tag from one of the trees and fulfilling a wish or a need. Additionally, collection bins for food were made available to the staff at the employee entrance of the casino and other areas throughout the property. Cash contributions were made to organizations to help fill food baskets for needy families during the holidays and Chinook Winds contributed to Operation Christmas Spirit for the annual Christmas dinner that feeds literally hundreds of people on Christmas Day. The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians gives a percentage of its net profits to charity each year as part of the compact between the state and the Tribe. Chinook Winds makes a large contribution each year in addition to the grants given out by the Tribe simply because giving is at the core of the American Indian way of life. Rather than choose one or two chari ties to support, the philosophy on giving is to support as many organizations as possible in their endeavors, providing as sistance in reaching their individual goals or fulfilling their needs. The Tribe has honored its tradition of sharing within the community by dis tributing more than $6.6 million through the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund and other Tribal resources. Chinook Winds has donated an estimated $1.75 million in cash and fund-raising items since it opened in 1995. In 2008, ap proximately 1,075 organizations received assistance from the casino.
