NOTICES Mack, Pilling Publish Native Christmas Story The Fourth Wise One: WichonFs Journey, written by Dorothy Blackcrow Mack and illustrated by Quitze Rose Pill ing. was published in December 2008. It s an American Indian Christmas story for all ages. A young Native girl has a vision to follow the bright star across North America to bring four gifts to honor a child born to be a great teacher. Wichoni fills her pack with what she decides are the four greatest gifts - water, air, food and fire. Along her path she chooses to give each one away to help people in need and arrives with her empty pack at the Endless Water where, discouraged, she discovers the greatest gift of all. This story came to Dorothy while she lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation, S.D., married to a Lakota sundance leader raising a sacred herd of buffalo. They lived in a one-room log cabin without electricity or running water - no books, many stories. Her extended family taught her gen erosity, cooperation and respect - for the land, the Elders, for all my relations: birds, rocks, trees, surrounded by the Everywhere Spirit. The story won first prize tor “My Favorite Holiday Story” and has been performed at libraries and church groups. Quitze lives in the temperate rainfor est of the Pacific Northwest. She grew up these past I I years inspired by a circle of artists, writers and musicians. Her first recognizable illustration was of a native rose. She loves the huckleberries, salmo nberries, salal, blackberries, thimbleber ries, tules and the worlds of stellar jays, chipmunks, red-tail hawks, white herons, brown pelicans, salmon, beaver and the storytellers who come to life on the page as she draws. Thank you for honoring the gifts of this story! Together, Dorothy and Quitze have given readings at the Newport Library, on KCUP radio, at Siletz Valley School and Head Start, and the Yachats Family Christ- Native American Congressional Internship Program । This is a 10-week summer internship in Washington.
