This was the dilemma the Natural Re sources Department faced recently at the Tribe's hatchery property. Many years prior to the Tribe pur chasing the 236-acre property that the Lhuuke Illahee Fish Hatchery sits on. the owners of the property installed an old railroad car as a bridge over Little Rock Creek to access approximately 200 acres on the far side of the creek. The large log bridge supports were placed on fill on each side of the creek and the rail car was placed on top of them. This worked fine until recently, when the logs started to rot out. Compounding the problem was the height of the bridge. During the last couple winters, root wads and other debris piled up against the bridge, unable to fit under it. This caused the water to run around the debris and cut into the banks on either side, undermining the already deteriorating log supports. The result - the bridge was being held up by sheer luck more than anything else. The Natural Resources Department hired McGee Engineering of Corvallis to provide us with some options. Pam was nominated by Bonnie Petersen, assistant general manager, and Michele Rowan, Human Resources manager.
