TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Tribal Election News 2009 Tribal Council Application by Kurtis Barker, Election Board Vice Chairman, 800-922-1399 or 541-444-2532 Application for names to be placed on the 2009 ballot for candidates in the Siletz Tribal Council election The Election Board has approved the timeline/schedule for the 2009 General Elec tion and a few rules regarding the Candidate’s Fair and candidate s statements. Statements will be limited to 450 words and not contain any personal attacks. One photo (optional) can be accepted with statements. Candidate's statements cannot be posted on Tribal property. E-mail Address:___________________ _________________ I understand I must be an enrolled member ot the Confederated Iribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon and 18 years of age or older. This application must be filed with the Election Board by 4 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2008. I also understand that if for any reason I decide to withdraw my application lor Siletz Tribal ( ouncil, I must withdraw in writing by Dec. 29, 2008. Otherwise, my name will appear in the voter’s pamphlet and on the ballot. Candidate’s Fair This year the Candidate’s Fair will be held Dec. 14, 2008. The fair was moved from January to December to encourage more participation from the General Council. Hopefully the weather will be mild enough to draw Tribal members from outside the Siletz area to attend. This year the Candidate’s Fair will take place before the deadline to file for can didacy. The deadline to file for candidacy is Dec. 24 by 4 p.m. In order to participate in the Candidate’s Fair, you must be declared and certified by the Election Board prior Signature:Date:------------------------------- to Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. Tribal members who plan on waiting until the last day to declare will not be al Mail your application to: CTSI, Election Board, P.O. Box 549, Siletz, OR lowed to participate in the Candidate’s Fair. The Candidate’s Fair will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and mediated by the Election 97380-0549. Board chairman. Voter’s Pamphlet and Statement If you would like your candidate’s statement and photo to appear in the voter’s pamphlet, please submit your statement and recent 3x5 photograph of yourself along with your application. Deadline for statements and photos is Dec. 24, 2008, at 4 p.m. Statements and photos will appear in the voter’s pamphlet. Photos will be included on the ballot. This is a family event and all youth must be accompanied by an adult. The Education Department is sponsoring this alcohol-free, tobacco-free and other drug-free event. In October, we had two Tribal members register who were eligible but not reg istered in previous elections. We also had two Tribal members who became eligible this year get registered. Great job, everyone! Registration Cards The Election Board recently mailed out registration cards to Tribal members whose names had changed. We verify our election ballots by the signature on the back of the ballot to our election database. If the signatures don’t match, the ballot has to be rejected because of non-matching signature. The Election Board then sends out a letter and new signature card to the voter. This year, we are hoping that by sending letters and cards out early, most of our members will update with plenty of time before the Tribal election.
