Darci Adolf and Shelley Glaze Shelley grew up loving libraries. Receiving her first library card at age 4, she was encouraged by her family. “My parents felt that it was essen tial to be able to use one’s imagination to the fullest and books were the per fect entry to the power of our minds,” Shelley explained. Boarding schools in Georgia and Massachusetts exposed her even fur ther to literature. Knowing she was destined to be a lifelong learner but not knowing what that would mean for a career, she de cided to study philosophy. In 2003, she graduated from the University of Port land with a B.A. She majored in phi losophy and minored in education. “For me, philosophy and education had the same building blocks, the same foundation, the same core. 1 was drawn to both. By the end of my time at the University of Portland, I knew I wanted to teach,” Shelley said. She taught kindergarten at a small private school. “I loved creating a literacy-rich classroom community. 1 also knew if 1 wanted to be the best teacher I could be, I simply needed more education myself,” she said She went on to get her master’s in education from Lewis and Clark Col lege. She loved her time there and fin ished the program in August 2006. “I am really looking forward to partnering with Siletz Valley School to encourage the love of literacy in Siletz. 1 hope my love of literature is conta gious!
