NOTICES Four Chosen for Traditional Arts Program Portland State University at Chemeketa Community College The Oregon Historical Society has announced the recipients of its 2007 Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. This program is the only one of its kind in Oregon specifically established to encourage the preservation of tradi tional arts by pairing master artists with apprentices from the same cultural back grounds. As a way of supporting tribal language programs, for the second year all master artists are also fluent speak ers of their indigenous languages. This year four groups of masters and apprentices from two of Oregon's tribal communities will work together through November. From the Confed erated Tribes of Warm Springs, New! Grande Ronde Sahaptin speaker Adeline Miller will train Merle Kirk in storytelling, Sahaptin speaker Suzie Slockish will teach Roberta Kirk Waashat songs, and Chinook Wasco speaker Viola L. Kalama will instruct Brigette M. Whipple in making willow baskets. In the final apprenticeship, Patricia Whereat-Phillips of the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians will work with John Cauthorn and other tribal members on stories in the Siuslaw language.
