TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Culture Camp FAQ Walt’s Words of Wit and Wisdom hy Walt Klamath Well, it has been quite awhile since I have written anything; have written about everything I know and some things I don't know. Guess I could use what I learned in college - “If you can't dazzle them with knowledge, baffle then with nonsense." See, education does do some good. A car came and those fawns stayed right there; the car went around them. A pickup with big wheels and a noisy motor came at a high rate of speed and blew his horn. The fawns, I think, thought it was music and just stood there and listened. The Worms and The Birds The Deer Frances has been gardening like crazy around the place. We had a deer fence all the way around except for about 10 feet by the house. Frances went out and there were deer tracks in her garden. The deer didn’t catch the dickens, but I did. Now the deer are moping around the place, sulking. They walk through the pasture and won’t even look at the house or us. They are teaching us a lesson, getting even. Last year in one of the gardens, the deer went under the fence, which is about 1 18 inches off the ground so we can work the weed-eater under the fence. Well, I dropped the electric fence down again; they were disturbed with us. The other day while clearing a view to get on the road from the driveway, a mama and two fawns at least a foot tall came out on the road. The fawns stopped in the middle of the road; mama was not too happy with them. This is such a good time of year for all new trees, animals, and birds. While fixing a water line after moving the deer fence burying the water pipe, I dug up some nice red worms. Now the robins are used to Frances and they follow her around catching the worms. The rob ins weren’t too sure about me, though. Mama or papa saw these worms that were dug up. The bird went from a post about 20 feet from me to a tree in the field, then came back to a post maybe 15 feet away. The worms were a-wiggling like crazy; they probably were a little uncomfortable with that robin flying around. After about 10 minutes, the bird did make it to 5 feet from where I was lean ing on the shovel handle. Then that robin made its play about 2 feet from me. The worm, however, had other ideas because that robin could not get that worm out of its hole quickly. The bird had to do some big-time pulling. The worm stretched out seemed like a foot before that robin took off to wher ever his/her babies were. Now the pigeons we could do with out. Those dadburned flying whatever- they-are eat every last cherry on the tree - every one. They don’t leave any. Only consolation about them is they don’t like blueberries. Other birds do, but they don't take all of the berries. • • • The Lizards and The Cat Then we have a whole bunch of lizards that like the sweat lodge area. There must be 20 of them - or one doing a lot of traveling. That could be, too, because they are faster than greased lightening. I can’t remember what kind of liz ard it is, but it’s on the insurance ad vertisement. They might like the heat in the lodge after everyone leaves, or maybe they are trying to intimidate us so we won’t go in and they can have it to themselves. Then there is a darn cat that moved in. The squirrel situation is pretty meek and the rabbit population is low too, so the cat eats dinner then goes out and catches dessert. 1 like the chipmunks around, but the cat likes them better, I guess. Well, maybe I can use my college education next month, so do take care of yourselves. r--------------------------------------------------- • • • • • When is Culture Camp?
