Siletz Tribal youth age 14-18 are
invited to apply for the 2007 Tribal
Youth Education & Employment
(TYEE’) Program. TYEE is an oppor
tunity for our youth to gain practical
work experience over the summer.
The program will begin July 9,
2007, and continue until no later than
Aug. 18, 2007. Youth participants will
complete 180 hours of paid work ex
perience during the program.
To qualify for the program, you
must be a Siletz Tribal member between
age 14-18, live within the 11-county
service area, and be returning to school
in the fall of 2007.
To apply, an application will be
mailed to you or you can stop by the
tribal office in your area. The contact

Training in fire safety comes before ...
CERTTeam Practices Fire Safety
The Siletz Community Emergency
Response Team has started its training
and underwent fire safety training on
May 3. After learning fire dynamics and
fire suppression, the team had a hands-
on exercise to put out an actual fire.
The CERT program goals are to
promote emergency preparedness; de
velop skills to respond to and cope with
the aftermath of a disaster; and develop
neighborhood self-sufficiency before,
during, and after a natural or manmade
disaster.
Topics taught and completed by the
participants include disaster prepared
ness, disaster fire suppression, disas
ter medical operations, light search and
rescue, terrorism, disaster psychology,
CERT organization, and the final drill.
CERT participants will acquire the
knowledge, skills, and abilities to not
only help their family be better prepared
for emergencies, but also assist their neigh
borhood in becoming better prepared
to take action when Siletz is threatened
by a major emergency or disaster.

In June, USDA staff will attend the
National Association of Food Distribu
tion Programs on Indian Reservations
annual conference in San Antonio. Texas.
This is a weeklong conference where
we meet staff from the federal level and
tribal program staff from all over the coun
try. We receive training in warehousing,
safety, nutrition education, diabetes
control, and the certification process. This
year we also will learn more about the
new commodity food ordering system.
We will leave for the conference
the weekend after our Siletz distribu
tion and before the Salem distribution.
