TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS TLC Attitudes of Gratitude by Lynn Whitlow Spring is definitely on its way, or so there is a promise of it outside to day. Can hardly wait for more sunshine. I know we need more rain to get the water tables up for summer, but we also need a balance between wet days and bright ones. Of course, we don't always get what we want - just be grate ful for being! We are very grateful to the Tribal Council for recognizing the ongoing needs at the TLC. It recently demon strated its support by providing addi tional funding. As a result, we have been able to hire a half-time aide. We are all excited to have Denise Riding In on board in that position. She has been a volunteer at the TLC so she is a natural fit. She brings a wealth of skills and experience to the position. She will work weekend and evening hours. Additional funds also allow for the purchase of supplies so the TLC does not have to rely on donations. Thank you so much, council members! Council also approved new and revised policies so that children can live at the TLC with their mothers. We’ll share more about mothers and children at the TLC in next month’s article. This month we welcome a new volun teer, Patricia Darcy, to the overnight staff of the TLC. We are really glad to have Auntie Pat join in the service we provide! We especially want to recognize the hard work of the current residents of the TLC and their support persons/sponsors who help them on their path of recov ery. Recovery is not an easy road, es pecially when you are on the early path. It takes a lot of energy and really hard, focused work to stay clean and sober. Every month, we continue to be grateful for our faithful volunteers! Thank you, thank you to Jackie Ashley, Eliza beth Kosydar, Jenifer Metcalf, and Alice McCain. You are the greatest! Much appreciation again to Natu ral Resources, especially Tristan, for cutting up the two trees that came down over the fence during those big wind storms. And we are grateful to you for stacking the wood in the woodshed to dry out for next year! Make Plans to Attend Siletz Tribal Youth Conference The Siletz Tribal Youth Conference has been rescheduled for March 27-28 at the Silver Creek Falls Conference Center near Salem. The registration process has been reopened to fill slots that have become vacant because of the rescheduling. The conference will start the morn ing of March 27 and will conclude af ter dinner on March 28. All meals and bedding are provided by Silver Creek Falls. In part because of lodging ac commodations, registration is limited to 44 youth. The conference is designed for youth in seventh through 12th grade. Staff members from the Culture, Edu cation, and Health programs are orga nizing and will run the conference. Chaperones from each area will assist youth and conference staff with run ning the conference. Youth and their parents are asked to complete a survey as a part of the reg istration process. The survey questions are a tool to help parents, youth, and staff develop expectations for conference cur riculum and experiences. Staff is avail able in Siletz and each area office to assist youth and parents with the survey. The curriculum and activities for this year’s conference are still under development. Workshops and presen tations will take place on tribal culture, history, education options, and re sources. There also will be experien tial workshops and activities designed to bring youth together and further de velop good relationships with each other and with tribal staff.
