que, N.M. for North America’s biggest

On the first day, we went to the Miss
Indian World pageant where 28 young
Native American women from through
out Indian Country competed for the title.
Cassie Thomas (Seneca) from
Lawtons, N. Y., was crowned Miss Indian
World 2005-2006. The selection is based
upon an assessment of personality, knowl
edge of tribal tradition, and dancing ability.
Other results from the pageant included:

On the following days, we attended
the Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow and
Indian Traders Market (more than 800
artists, crafters, and traders placed their
wares on display and for sale) at the Uni
versity of New Mexico Arena in the “Pit.”
More than 3,000 indigenous, Native
American dancers and singers representing
more than 500 tribes from Canada and
the U.S. come to Albuquerque annually
to participate socially and competitively,
with more than $140,000 awarded to
dancers and singers.
The drum competitions included five
places in each category. The 2005 South
ern Drum Champion was Young Bird of
Pawnee, Okla., and the 2005 Northern
Drum Champion was Northern Cree of
Hobbema, Alberta, Canada.
One of the most enjoyable things for
me was to watch the different dances, like
the Kiowa Gourd Dancers (those who
have done exceptional things in their lives),
from the different tribes - first they show
you and then you can join them on the
floor if you want.
The Gathering of Nations Pow-Wow
was a wonderful experience, with so
many things going on that you just don't
want to miss!

This was our last assembly for the
year. We would like to thank Noel's Mar
ket, Little Chief, Sweet River Corner
Cafe, Siletz Gas & Mini-Mart, our vol
unteers, and the community for another
fantastic year. We would not be able to
accomplish our goals without you.
It’s individuals like yourself who will
motivate our students to reach their full
potential and give back to our commu
nity. The staff and students appreciate
your continued support.
We look forward to seeing you in
September. Have a great summer!
