It’s Happening at Chinook Winds in April ...
by Teresa Simmons
Call for Entries in Miss Native
American Oregon Pageant
Little River Band
Little River Band to perform at
Chinook Winds Casino
The Little River Band will bring its
rich five-part harmonies to Chinook
Winds Casino on April 23-24. Of their
glistening vocals, Glenn Frey of The
Eagles once said they were the best
harmonizing band in the business.
Prior to the success of AC/DC, Air
Supply, Men At Work, and INXS, Little
River Band was Australia’s most
successful international rock band.
Formed in 1975 in Melbourne,
Australia, Little River Band is
celebrating 29 years of making music
that has included 10 top-10 hits in
the U.S.
The band’s 14 albums, with total
sales exceeding 25 million units, have
included such hits as Lonesome Loser,
Lady, Cool Change, and Reminiscing.
Tickets for Little River Band range
from $15 to $25 and are on sale now.
Show time is 8 p.m. both nights.
Join the NCAA “Final Four”
Viewing Party
See the final games of the men’s college basketball championships on April 3
and April 5 at Chinook Wind Casino’s free NCAA “Final Four” parties in the
Rogue River Lounge.
Applications are available for
contestants in the second annual Miss
Native American Oregon pageant,
which will take place on Aug. 21,2004,
at Chinook Winds Casino & Conven
tion Center. Those interested in entering
the pageant should contact Dixie
Lorange at 541 -996-2826.
This event provides scholarships to
young ladies who are enrolled members
of federally recognized tribes and
residents of the state of Oregon. The
winner will be eligible to compete for
the title of Miss Oregon 2005 in
Seaside, Ore., in July 2005, with the
ultimate goal of competing for the title
of Miss America 2006 in September
2005 in Atlantic City, N.J.
Since capturing the crown,
last year’s winner and the very
first Miss Native American
Oregon, Apollonia Lane, has
had a busy year. She has spoken
on tobacco prevention (her
forum) to local elementary
schoolchildren, in Boston at the
National Conference on Tobacco and
Health, and before the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
During this time, she’s been
studying human services with a focus
on addiction studies at Chemeketa
Community College in Salem, Ore.
Apollonia is a member of the
Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians
of Oregon.
Many young women dream of
scholarships to help pay for college.
Every year, the Miss Oregon
Scholarship Program offers to its
contestants more than $ 100,000 in cash
and in-kind tuition scholarships. These
scholarships are awarded to any
competitor, not just the ultimate
titleholder. Scholarships are
available for academic achieve
ment, community service,
talent, fitness, speaking skills,
and more.
