It’s Happening at Chinook Winds in August ... Portland Man Hits Jackpot Paul Betterton won $240,658 when he hit the Wheel of Fortune® quarters MegaJackpot™at Chinook Winds Casino on July 5. Betterton, who lives in Portland, said he was on his way to the beach but decided to visit the casino first. He went on to say that friends recommended the winning machine. “I've had good luck in the past and (my) friends said this one was paying well,” he said. Coincidentally, Betterton reported that his wife “almost won” five minutes earlier. After investing about $80, Betterton said he was “ecstatic” upon realizing he had won the top prize. Immediate plans for these winnings include paying bills, but Betterton added, “We need a bigger house and this will help us to do that.” This MegaJackpot™is the 10th to be awarded at the casino, bringing Chinook Winds’ total IGT payout to more than $5.2 million since 1996. Of the nine MegaJackpots™to be awarded, five have been on the 25-cent Wheel of Fortune progressive system, and one on the $1 Wheel of Fortune progressive system. The Chinook Winds parking lot will be transformed into another beautiful beach for this sand volleyball tourn ament. This PACNOVA event will be packed with fun for everyone! The weekend will kick off on Aug. 1 with a Chinook Winds Employee Vol leyball Challenge from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tournaments will take place on Aug. 2-3. It’s a double elimination tournament for Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles in Men’s Open, Men’s “A,” Women’s Open, Women’s “A,” and Over 40 Masters divisions. Cash prizes will be given only for the Open and A Division tournaments with payouts to 16 places. The first- place prize in the Men’s Open Division is $5,000 and $ 1,000 for the Men’s “A” Division. Participants must check in by 7:30 a.m. for the competition that begins at 8 a.m. All matches except Kenny Loggins will perform at Chinook Winds on Aug. 8-9. 1 'm Alright is just one of his tunes that’s been dancing around in your head for years. Loggins began his career as a staff writer for Wingate Music and came to prominence as a member of Loggins and Messina from 1972-77. After separating from Jim Messina, Loggins set out on a solo recording career, specializing in rock ballads such as Whenever I Call You Friend, a 1978 top 5 hit in the U.S. that was co-written by Melissa Manchester and included harmony vocals by Stevie Nicks. Pro volleyball doubles champions exhibition matches will be held at the championship courts in the parking lot on Aug. 2, featuring volleyball greats Mike Dodd, Jon Stevenson, Linda Hanley, and Liz Masakayan. Mike Dodd, known as M.D., has won a total of $ 1,548,752 during his 16 years as a professional volleyball player. He won the silver medal in beach volleyball at the 1996 Olympics. Stevenson, AKA “Jonny the Steve,” has racked up career winnings of $297,226 during his 15-year career and has long been regarded as “pound for pound, the best beach player in the world.” Hanley, with career earnings at $167,517, has competed in 14 grand slam events and is ninth in earnings. She was a USBVA All-American in 1980. Masakayan has won a whopping $291,692 over the course of her vol leyball career. She and her partner won two of four matches at the 1996 Olympic trials. These super athletes also will be available for autographs and photos during this three-day event. Enjoy free tropical parties on Aug. 1-2 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. with DJ-driven music! On Aug. 1, a Caribbean party and dance, including the Miss Hawaiian Tropics preview, will be held. A surf party and dance will be held on Aug. 2, including the Oregon finals of the Miss Hawaiian Tropics contest. This will conclude the Oregon Coast Miss Hawaiian Tropics competition, a preliminary of the largest pageant of its kind in the world.
