Hill Carries on Family Tradition

Jeremy Hill, 18, was just hired on at Chemawa as a home living assistant. He
joins his sister there.
For decades, members of our family have worked at Chemawa. The ironic
thing is that Jeremy is doing the same work as his Great-grama Lane.
I was thinking about the last conversation I had with Grama Lane (three weeks
prior to her death). She was talking about how proud she was of Jenera working
at Chemawa. Jeremy walked out of the concert toward us and she said, “Oh my,
Jeremy is so grown up.” Then she said, “I just can’t believe he will graduate
soon.” Then she added, “You wait and see, that Jeremy is gonna make something
of himself.”
She would be very proud of him now. My hope is that Jeremy will do as good
a job now as Grama Lane did some 60 years ago.
is presented to alumni whose professional, civic, and personal achievements bring
high honor to themselves and recognition to their alma mater. This award is the
highest honor the Southern Oregon University Alumni Association bestows upon
its alumni.
Your contributions to your alma mater, your people and community, the nation,
and the world are remarkable. You touch young lives through the Konaway Nika
Tillicum Native American Summer Program and advising the SOU Native
American Student Union as the Elder Advisor. Being names as a “Living Cultural
Legend ” by the Oregon Council on the Arts, and being invited to meet the native
Maori of New Zealand, the Aborigines of Australia, are among your many special
achievements. You re altruistic nature in sharing your wisdom with others makes
the world a better place. We are grateful to David D. West, Director of our Native
American Studies, for nominating you. We are proud of your achievements and so
glad for the inspiration they give to those who follow in your footsteps to becoming
alumni of Southern Oregon University.
