Taylor Helps Teach Tribal Court Law College of the Redwoods, a community college in Northern California, will offer a unique set of courses this summer and fall in tribal court law. The classes are designed for people who want to serve as advocates or spokespersons in tribal courts or those interested in social work, public health, law enforcement, or the legal system. Students will learn about tribal courts, jurisdiction, and procedures. If a person is currently a tribal spokesperson, their skills can be improved or refined. “One does not have to be a law student or graduate of law school to be eligible to take these classes.’’ said Keith Taylor, one of the instructors and a former tribal judge and prosecutor. “These courses are not offered at any other two- or four-year school in the country.” The program consists of three courses: Introduction and Overview, Case Development and Presentation, and Appellate Level. The first course, Introduction and Overview, will be offered on July 13 and 14. The second course, Case Development and Presentation, is scheduled for Sept. 6 and 7. The third course, Appellate Level, will be held on Oct. 19 and 20. “These classes will help students to become better advocates in tribal courts or in any court of law,” said Gary Sokolow, another instructor and also a former tribal judge and prosecutor. “It is geared toward people who already work in the tribal courts.” College of the Redwoods is located about five miles south of Eureka, Calif., and approximately 275 miles north of San Francisco.
