TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS r Ueland Wins Wrestling Championship The following students deserve our congratulations for making the Siletz Middle School Honor Roll for the first semester: Grade 8, 3.5-3.9 GPA - Juanita Lane; Grade 7, 3.5-3.9 GPA - Danny Elgin, Jasmine Whitehead; Grade 6, 3.0-3.49 GPA - Kent Kaiser. Jacob Ueland, son of Dirk and Teresa Ueland of Corvallis, Mont., and grandson of Dan and LaRita Lundy of Siletz, won the Montana State Wrestling Championship for KX) pound Novice on March 23. He pinned his opponent in the final match. Jacob is 11 years old. He is a fifth-grader at Corvallis Middle School. His family is so proud of him! Siletz School Peer Mediation Program Pullam Earns Letter for Equestrian Team Congratulations to Marika Pullam on earning her letter for participating on the equestrian team. Marika is a freshman at Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Ore. Congratulations, Marika! We - Aunt Tina and all the family - are proud of you! Other volunteers for training not pictured: Dillon Blacketer, peer mediator; Barb Woehle, Felicia Todd, Mary Alice Harley, Fred Collazo, Amy Campbell, and Heather Alexander. 10 □ Siletz News □ ———— Students Make Honor Roll Mey 2002 Thanks to a grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund, the Siletz School Peer Mediation Program is back on the job. This program trains students to peacefully resolve conflicts on the playground and in the middle school. It provides a positive way for students to discuss differences or difficulties they are experiencing with other students and together come up with a peaceful resolution. Valerie Payne, program director for Lincoln Community Dispute Resolution, and Barb Woehle, Siletz/Waldport Safe and Drug-Free School coordinator, conducted a refresher training for the 14 peer mediators who were trained during the last school year. Tribal member and Parent Volunteer Coordinator Nanette Logan assisted them. A two-day training for the 17 new peer mediators followed. In these trainings, the students learn active listening, empathy, paraphrasing, and creative questioning skills. The technique is consistent with adult mediation training and was developed by the Resolving Conflicts Creatively Program. Research indicates that not only do these skills help in facilitating the disputes of others, they help peer mediators withstand peer pressure for things like drug use or other anti-social activities. The 31 peer mediators are now on the job at Siletz School. They are on duty during lunch recess and an on-call basis for the middle school. The peer mediators always have an adult coach on hand. The adult coaches are Priscilla Bradley, Nanette Logan, and Valerie Payne. Everyone is very pleased with the results so far. When the expectation is that people talk through their differences instead of resorting to violence, the climate at a school can change. The hope is that Siletz School can become a model for adults in Lincoln County and in the Siletz community.
