Tribal Council member Lillie Butler (I) and Education Committee member Mona Fisher (r) also join Bill Guempelein from Pepsi-Cola in the presentation. The money will be used for scholarships. Tribal Court News from the office of Tribal Court November DOJ Grant News Judge Gantenbein attended training entitled “Constitutionalists” at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nev. Court clerk and administrator attended a notary seminar in Newport, Ore. Court administrator attended an in-house grant writing workshop. The DOJ Tribal Court development grant was approved at a Special Tribal Council meeting on Nov. 2 and was mailed to DOJ on Nov. 9. The Tribal Council approved Tribal Court’s final application for a DOJ grant. If the grant is approved for funding through the DOJ, its goals will be to develop law guides for self-help through the Tribal Court system, form a volunteer-trained spokesperson pool within the 11-county service area, and purchase a computer software program specifically designed for the Siletz Tribal Court system. PSU Tribal Program Schedules Class Portland State University’s Tribal Administration Program (TAP) has scheduled the following class for the winter 2(X)2 term, which runs from Jan. 7 to March 23: PA 410/510 Tribal Sovereignty Instructor: Glenda Durham, J.D. Thursdays, 4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The course provides students with a thorough understanding of the legal issues associated with tribal sovereignty. The class presents a comprehensive historical discussion that includes a CD-ROM for students containing historical documents that provide the legal foundation for Indian law in the U.S. TAP courses meet in the Urban Center’s Distance Learning Classroom and are broadcast to Oregon tribes, including Siletz. Video conferencing and web based student interaction are integrated into the curriculum. The courses are listed as PA 410 Section 004, CRN 45102, 3 credit hours and PA 510 Section 002, CRN 44725, 3 credit hours.
