Dennis, Lil’ Ron, and Jordan I'm looking for my lost relatives in the Pacific Northwest. My great-grandfather traveled west and married a woman in Oregon who was half-Indian, but no one now knows what tribe or nation she came from. Great-grandpa, William Nelson Moore, was using an assumed name, Rev. John J. Black, when he married great-grandma Elsie. They lived in Columbia County, Ore., for a few years and had three children there: Robert Burton, Jesse Alger, and daughter Ethel. They appear in the 1900 federal census, in which Robert is listed, bom 1899, and Elsie was shown as bom in Oregon in May 1881. Later, when Elsie was pregnant with Ethel, Nelson was informed of some emergency in his original West Virginia home place, so he returned there. After Ethel was bom, Elsie and the children came to Wy to join him there. The couple had two more sons, Price Norman and my grandfather, Theodore Roosevelt Moore. Sometime after that, Elsie returned to the Pacific Northwest because she "missed her people.” Whether she intended only a visit or a permanent move isn’t known, but according to the older children, Nelson opposed her leaving at all and told her that if she did go, then to not bother coming back. Nelson, who had watched all his kids from his first marriage be separated and sent away to other families after the death of his first wife, refused to let any of their children go with Elsie when she left. She left in tears because Nelson wouldn’t let go of the baby (my grandfather). This was probably sometime between 1905 and 1909. We know from an undated photo Elsie sent after she returned to the Northwest that she had at least one more child, a girl named Lorraine or Larrain (spelling uncertain). We don’t know now whether she was pregnant when she left, or whether she married again in the Northwest, or what happened. She may have later had other children, too. Standard searches have turned up nothing on them. The white immigrant family that Elsie was living with at one time shows up frequently in Portland city directories, but there is never any hint of Elsie or Lorraine with them. There are apparently no marriage, birth, death, divorce, Social Security, or census records for either of them. Elsie wrote letters to the children in WV, but in the 1920s the letters stopped and it was speculated that she had died. (The letters are all gone now; they were lost when the house burned during the Depression). Elsie lived in Oregon part of the time; she also may have lived in Washington. Elsie was believed to have had diabetes; she may have died from that or from complications related to it. Nelson had a change of heart in later years and went to the Northwest for an entire summer to look for Elsie (sometime in the teens, probably), but he wasn’t able to find her. My granddaddy and Uncle Price were never able to find either Elsie or their lost sister, Lorraine, or learn what had become of them. Is it possible that Elsie and Lorraine were overlooked because they were on a reservation or in some other neglected area with Elsie’s mother's people? Could this be why there are no records of them in the “standard” sources? Is it possible that Lorraine is still alive? Did Lorraine have children? If this story fits with any of the family histories and stories of those you know in your tribe, I’d greatly appreciate knowing about it. I would like our family to find our lost relatives! Proud parents are Jennifer Kane and Mark Soukup; grandparents are Rose Kunkel of Salem and Jean and Barry Warden of Monmouth. Happy Birthday to my great- grandson, Chayson Thunder.
