Tribal Youth Jobs Available
Tribal education specialists will coordinate the Summer 2001 Tribal Youth
Employment Program (TYEP). The purpose of TYEP is to provide Siletz Tribal
youth with the opportunity to develop work habits that will benefit them as
they mature.
TYEP will provide youth with a work site to allow them to experience and
develop job skills. Youth may work up to 180 hours through this program. Selection
for the program will be based on the following criteria:

A complete application submitted to the local tribal area office
Youth must be returning to school or enrolled in a GED or high school
completion program
There is no income criterion to qualify for this program
To apply, complete the application mailed to you, or call or stop by the tribal
office in your area. The contact person for each office is listed at the end of this
article. Bring verification to document the following:

Youth 14-16 years old with little or no work experience, who have not
participated in TYEP

applicants with less than a 2.0 GPA may be considered

Youth from families not eligible for the ESP Summer Youth Employment

A very productive judges meeting
was held in Portland in April. All judges
were present with the exception of
Judge Art Fisher, who was unable to
make his flight because of bad weather.
Chief Judge Calvin Gantenbein
went over administrative business with
the court judges, and Norm Counts,
Siletz Tribal police chief, presented an
update on law enforcement. Diane
Henkels, TCCD project coordinator,
presented a draft of each of the
following: Traffic Code and possible
procedures, Criminal Code and
potential problems, and the Family
Welfare Code, followed by a round-
table discussion of the drafts.
Linda Gast of Legal Aid Services
of Oregon was scheduled to present
ideas on spokespeople in tribal court,
priority cases, and building resources.
She encountered a personal injury,
however, and was unable to be present.
The judges and staff discussed a
request to host a Northwest Tribal Court
Judges Association meeting and agreed
that we would like to do this, possibly
in 2002.

The Siletz Tribal Pow-Wow Committee is now taking applications for this
year’s royalty contestants. The age categories are as follows:
Little Miss Siletz - 7 to 12
Jr. Miss Siletz - 13 to 17
Miss Siletz - 18 to 24

Young women interested in running in one of these categories can contact
Craig Whitehead at 1-800-922-1399, ext. 230, or 541-444-8230 to get your
application. The pageant is scheduled for Aug. 9, 2001, and the winners will be
crowned before the first grand entry of the Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow on Aug. 10.
The deadline to get your applications into the Pow-Wow Committee is
July 2, 2001. Any applications that are turned in from July 3 to July 15 will be
accepted only by the approval of the Pow-Wow Committee. All applications
that are turned in after July 15 will not be accepted for this year.
You will be judged on your knowledge of tribal and family history, poise
and personality, speaking abilities, dance abilities in both the Feather Dance
and Intertribal styles, and ticket sales. Each contestant will receive a commission
on the number of tickets that she sells. The commission rates are as follows:
200 to 500 at 20 percent; 501 to 1,000 at 25 percent, and 1,001 and over at 30
percent. This year’s royalty will be sponsored to attend the Gathering of Nations
Pow-Wow and Miss Siletz also will be sponsored to go to the NCAI competition.
