Corridor Safety Committee Receives First Contribution The Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce was the first to step forward and make a cash donation to a project designed to keep winter drivers of Highway 18 and 22 informed of road conditions. exciting to see our community at-large get behind a project that has been too long in the coming,” said Jim Lorson, chair of the Highway 18 & 22 Safety Committee. Lorson also is the interim assistant general manager of Chinook Winds Casino. The Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce voted to give the committee $500 according to Peggy Leoni, a member of the committee’s steering board and a member of the Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce. “We have been asked what $500 will do towards a fund that needs to buy a vehicle, provide for staff, gasoline, tires, and other eminence,” said Lorson. “What it does is get us started. We needed to begin and the Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce gave us a starting point,” added the steering committee chair. Recently, the committee held a press conference to explain to the news media how critical the safety project is. It also explained how different the Van Duzer Corridor conditions could be versus other routes to the coast. Highway 18 is lower in elevation and is therefore less vulnerable to icy conditions. “We want people to come to the coast this winter safely, have a great time at our beaches, shops, restaurants, hotels and other attractions, and then return safely to their homes and begin making plans for their next visit,” said Leoni. “Depoe Bay wanted to be the first to step in and lend support,” Leoni concluded. The committee has received word from the American Automobile Association (AAA) that it will accept the committee’s weather and road observations as will the Oregon Department of Transportation. “We have to be honest, if the conditions merit watching, we won’t candy-coat it. The same holds true for better conditions than what are being reported,” concluded Lorson.
