Forest Management Ordinance
Available for Review
The Tribal Council has completed the first reading of the
draft Forest Management Ordinance. The draft ordinance
provides a legal framework for managing and operating tribal
forest lands in compliance with the Tribal Forest Management
Plan and federal laws and regulations.
The draft ordinance requires the tribal forester to manage
the tribal forest lands in an environmentally sound manner that
will maintain and improve timber production and protect cultural
and traditional values. Tribal member use of the forests continues
to be governed primarily by the Hunting, Fishing and Gathering
Ordinance, STC § 7.01, and Timber Use Permits Ordinance,
STC § 7.300.
The draft ordinance also codifies the tribe’s concurrent
jurisdiction over forest trespass cases. Through the ordinance,
the tribe and the federal government will be able to fully cooperate
in prosecuting and obtaining damages against those who illegally
damage or remove tribal forest products.
