PASSAGES Many of you may have noticed two new benches along the sidewalk to the mailboxes of Silatchee homes. I have donated these benches to the residents and elders for a much easier walk to pick up your mail or just take a rest. I hope you all enjoy! Kitti Hostler Congratulations, Shelly Butler! She was the third place contest winner in Women’s Jingle at the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon 2000 Annual Contest Pow-Wow. Tribal member Chris Fisher, Bingo- Keno manager, and Brenda Hovis, marketing director at Chinook Winds Casino, got married on Aug. 3 in Las Vegas at the “Little White Chapel.” Michael Jordan as well as Bruce Willis and Demi Moore also were married there. Happy Birthday to Dale Robertson from Alison, Seth, and Hunter Noble. Congratulations to my husband, Seth, for his recent promotion to VLT technician. I am very proud of you. Love, your daughter Trish, Tyrone, and Donovan Local Players Win Native American World Championships The Chinook Winds men’s softball team won the 2000 Native American World Softball Championships on Sept. 9 at Wallace Marine Park in Salem, Ore. The team played seven games throughout the two-day tournament, losing two games and competing for the championship on Saturday evening against the Karuk team from Springfield, Ore. They won in the second championship game by rallying with 10 runs in the last inning, with Mark Wheeling hitting a grand slam. Wheeling was selected as MVP and Doug Colton received an award for Most Outstanding Offensive Player. Willie Metcalf, Bret Lane, Wazzy Case and Mike Cauriton were selected as members of the All-Native American World Team. Teams from Arizona, Oklahoma, Florida, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada competed for the championship. Team members include Siletz Tribal members Wazzy Case, Brandon Case Jerrv Howell, Jason Howell, Marcus Butler, Willie Metcalf, Leon Metcalf, Benny Marzan Bristo Bayya, Mark Wheeling, Brett Lane, Manual Bayya, and Michael Fisher; Grand Ronde Tribal members Greg Leno and Doug Colton; and Mike Cauriton from Washington. The trophy is on display at Chinook Winds and all players received a plaque. 23
