TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS CX Henkels Leads |U y Tribal Court Code Project Last fall, the Siletz Tribe received an ANA grant to continue building the tribe’s Royalty Applications Now Available The Siletz Tribal Pow-Wow Committee is now taking applications for this year’s royalty contestants. The age categories are as follows: Little Miss Siletz - 7 to 12 years old Jr. Miss Siletz -13 to 17 years old Miss Siletz -18 to 24 years old legal infrastructure. The purpose of this ANA project is to study concurrent jurisdiction issues, revise and/or draft criminal and criminal procedures, draft domestic relations and tax ordinances, and study and possibly add a peacemaker component to the Siletz Tribal Court. Like a previous ANA grant for the Natural Resources Department, this grant includes community meetings and trainings. The pageant is scheduled for Aug. 10,2000, and the winners will be crowned before the first grand entry at the Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow on Aug. 11. The deadline to submit royalty applications to the Pow-Wow Committee is July 15,2000. Applications turned in after July 15 will not be accepted. Applicants will be judged on their knowledge of tribal and family history, poise and personality, speaking ability, dance ability in both the feather dance and intertribal styles, and ticket sales. Each contestant will receive a commission on the number of tickets that she sells - 1 to 500 at 20 percent, 501 to 1,000 at 25 percent, and anything over 1,000 at 30 percent. This year’s royalty will receive sponsorship to attend the Gathering of Nations Pow- Wow and Miss Siletz also will be sponsored in NCAI competition. noticed it more in the last few months when Cat Tufts was project attorney and began to actively work on the project. Diane Henkels, who previously worked as law clerk for the ANA Natural Resources Ordinance Project, is now project attorney for this ANA Tribal Court Code project. Two more project staff people will come on board in the near future. We will be busy this summer with concurrent jurisdiction research and a needs assessment. We also will revise and/or write the criminal/criminal procedures ordinances.
