A Tribute to Mothers
by Sister Francella Griggs
Presented at the Elders Gathering in May
Mother. What a concept. You are so precious that God wants each of us to have a
mother, a mother to love and care for us. And when something happens we can’t have her
another lovely woman comes into our lives - a blood sister, an auntie, a godmother or the
special grandmother.
It is you we salute today - the mothers who bore us and those who took their
places so we might be the children, the persons you envisioned.

mother substitute, please place your hand on her knee.
Mom, we thank you for leading us when we were toddlers, during our childhood
teen, and adult years. Thank you for directing us on the right way.
Now please place your hand on her shoulder.
Mother, thank you for that shoulder on which we leaned to receive comfort. Thank
you for the elbow that nudged us. Thank you for the hands that showed us how to prav to
work, to welcome people, and even to say “good-bye."
