LEITERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: We would like to thank the Siletz Indian Housing Authority for this generous grant to buy our new home. Without it, we would have never been able to buy a house of our own. We could always afford the payments, but we could never save for the down payment. When we saw the notice of the program, we jumped at the chance to qualify. We had no idea what we were getting into, nor did we realize there would be so many hurdles to overcome, but we believe the program is well worth it. To all the people who want to apply next time, here is some advice: Do not give up! We probably would have if it wasn’t for our real estate agent, Kathy Whittam; she was a godsend. She kept giving us encouragement throughout the entire process. A special thanks to Dave Litchy. Without your support, and humor, we wouldn’t have made it. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the following: 1)Fred and Betty Helmig (Jackie’s parents), for all their help and support. 2) Erick Nyquest, for helping us move and for helping out on some minor repairs on the house. 3) Bryan Struve, for allowing us to store our furniture in his garage. Gratefully, Jackie and Michael Hove To the editor: At our 3/11/00 Siletz elders meeting, the Siletz elders voted to honor Gary Daniels at the Spring Pow-Wow with an Honor Dance. Gary works at the casino and has contributed to the great success of our casino. As you know, Gary is not well and has accumulated medical bills due to a major illness. We wanted to help Gary with his medical bills and express our appreciation to him for all that he has done for us. I have been criticized for this. Other members have said you are setting a precedent for helping others with problems. We have tribal members who need help. For your information, the precedent was set many years ago by our people. My dad spent many years working for the railroad and my mother spent her time and what little money they had supporting many families in our tribe. If you needed any food, you were welcome to go to our home and mom would go to the smokehouse and give you fish. They would welcome you if you came at dinnertime. Everyone was always welcome. I could write a book on all the good things my parents did for everyone. I think the success of the Grand Ronde Tribe is their leaders care about their people. They work for the betterment of all of their tribal members. We should remember that. We need to care about each other and try to continue to help each other. So, we are not setting a precedent now. I am just trying to follow the path of great leaders who have gone before us. Shirley Ben Walker CTSI Elders Chairman To the editor: Hau, Kolas. My name is Merlin Eagle Horse. Full blood Mnikoju, and enrolled member of Cheyenne River Agency of South Dakota. I find it of great interest to read Indian papers from different tribes, what tribal organizations have done for the people. There will always be differences among us, Elma Louise Chapman-Thompson To the editor: On behalf of my family, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to all the people who showed sincere compassion to us at the time of the death and ceremony for Elma Louise Chapman- Thompson. Your concern and participation helped to relieve some of the pain and grief. I will always remember your out-flowing of feelings! Thank you so much, George Thompson and family 2 and with the right approach of the people, the directions become clear. I would like to continue reading your paper. I would be greatly honored if person(s) would find it in their heart to provide this material for me. I would also like to seek correspondence with females out there in Indian Country. Hau.
