5th Annual Run to the Rogue September 16 - 18, 1999 The Run to the Rogue is an annual event that commemorates the removal of the Siletz Tribal ancestors from their homeland in the Rogue River country. In 1851, when gold was discovered on the Rogue River, conflict between the settlers who came for the gold, and the native people lead to what is known as the Rogue River Indian wars (1851-1856). By treaty agreement the tribes agreed to relocate to a reservation on the Central Oregon coast. In November 1855, the 1.1 million acre coast reservation was designated to be the permanent home for all the Tribes from Western Oregon. In approximately the beginning of February 1856, the first group of people were removed. Over the next year groups were taken to the reservation through either overland marches or transport on steamship decks via the coast and the Columbia River. The most difficult trips were the 244-mile forced marches from Port Orford to the Siletz Agency, which included many of the elders, pregnant mothers and small children. Within 20 years, the 1.1 million-acre coast reservation had been reduced by 75 percent of its original size, without any treaty agreement or compensation. The Run to the Rogue is an event for Siletz Tribal members to remember with respect the hardships suffered by their ancestors and to renew the physical and spiritual connections. One way that this event is made possible is through the generous donations by businesses and individuals. We raffle or auction off prizes to earn money to pay for expenses. A list of donations, to date, is listed. Please show your appreciation for the donations by these businesses. You can tell others about them or visit them yourself.
