RUN TO THE ROGUE Run to the Rogue by Laurie Brown-Godfrey This year’s event went very well. We reached our destination in record time. We had participants from Brookings, Cottage Grove, Corvallis, Dallas, De Poe Bay, Keizer, Portland, Prineville, Salem, Seal Rock, Seattle, South Beach, Springfield and Toledo this year. It is always nice to see returning participants and we appreciate the long journey that several tribal members took to reach this event. Dan Viles traveled from Prineville, Ed De Poe and John Roe Jr. traveled from Seattle, Washington. Our youngest participant was five month old Samuel Riding In, from Portland, who was escorted by his mother Dorna. We had a record number of Head Start participants this year. 43 Head Start students walked the first mile! We have some special thank you’s that need to go out. We would like to thank the Tribal Council for supporting this event and offering a cultural day for staff members on the 18,h. We are thankful that we had a record number of elders participatin in this event. We would like to thank the Fry family for hosting the pow-wow and recognizing the Run to the Rogue participants as we entered the Pow-wow grounds. We would like to thank the community members in Port Orford, for hosting a pot-luck on Friday night for the Run to the Rogue participants. This pot luck was hosted at the Senior Center in Port Orford. The food was delicious and the hosts were very gracious. The small creature comforts of sitting at a table inside in a lighted, heated building mean so much after several days on the road. We would like to thank Bob Tom and the Soaring Hawk Drum for drumming us into the pow-wow. We would also like to acknowledge those who shared their thoughts as we walked our last mile and the elder’s who carried the staffs into the pow-wow grounds. Last but not least, we would like to thank our cooks and the meal delivery service attendants. Tina Retasket did an excellent job and Anne Eddings was always there to assist. Thank you both for all of your hard work! Thanks to Bristo & Rena for delivering the food to the runners the first night, what a nice surprise! A big thank you to the support drivers and to PEPSI for donating 24 cases of beverages. The Run to the Rogue Committee plans to make a plaque with the names of the 1998 Run to the Rogue participants. We have listed the names below in alphabetical order. If you participated, but are not listed below, please contact Laune at 746-9658 so that we may add your name. Participants will have until November 1, 1998 to have their name added before we place the order. 199$ Run fa the Rogue Participants by Tina Re taste t (elders are listed in bold): With another year of “Run to the Rogue” Shellev Andrews. Now that the run is over, we will begin to evaluate this year’s activity and note any changes that we will need to make. This process has been very helpful, as we have made many improvements since the first year. It is our hope that participants will share their thoughts so that we can continue to improve this event. You can help support Run to the Rogue V by buying raffle tickets. Tickets are now on sale at each area office. They are $ 1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. We have over $ 1000.00 in prizes. The grand prize will be lodging for two at the Shilo with breakfast. The drawing will be held at the Siletz Restoration Pow-Wow on November 21,1998. Buy your tickets now and support the Run to the Rogue V! For those who haven’t joined us, please think about it next year. There is fun and joy, pain and agony, and a single- minded purpose to take that next step until we finally arrive at our destination. There are no words to describe the feeling you get when you finally arrive in Agness, so I won t try — you just have to experience it. See you next year!!! HARASSING THE COOK(S) CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR FOOD - Sign posted at camp. IT WORKED.'!! -3-
