NEWS 2 Brainiacs unite CLACKAMAS STUDENTS JOIN PHI THETA KAPPA HONOR SOCIETY STORY AN D PHOTOS BY JASON SIS§ON @ N EW SM AN JAY NEWS EDITOR Another class o f Clackam as Com m unity College students was inducted into Alpha Xi Zeta, the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Students m ust make the CCC honor roll — which requires achieving a 3.5 grade-point average — to be invited to join PTK. Those who were invited and accepted were honored at a ceremony at the Elks Lodge in Oregon City on Wednesday, May 15. /‘W ell, it’ s definitely an achievem ent. [I’ve] never really got inducted into much o f a n y th in g b e fo r e ,” said A lexan d er Novitchkov- Burbank, an inductee and now recording officer for the local PTK chapter. The event included a dinner, ceremony and several speeches. The first speech was from Jason Ward, an alumni advisory board member for the Rocky Mountain Cascade Region of PTK, who spoke about his journey and how the honor society has improved his life. “ Som ething else th at I ’ve gotten out of Phi Theta Kappa is the knowledge that I have the* ability to set goals and obtain them , and I don’t think I would have that Theta Kappa is really a good opportunity sense o f self-e fficacy if I hadn’t set my t o h o n e th ese sk ills and really a nice sights on getting involved with this honor opportunity that you want to be sure to take advantage o f,” Cook said. “ And if it society,” Ward sa id .. Gietl floor to C C C president Tim Cook, Cook . spent the majority of her tim e speaking about turning obstacles into opportunities was first m et with the surprise o f being named an honorary PTK, member before while also noting that it was the largest induction class she had seen, with more diving into his speech. He spent his time elaborating on some of his story and on than 100 in attendance. Gietl shared her why these students’ accomplishments are own obstacles — such as having emergency so important. Cook spoke about concerns open-heart surgery at 30— and how she over a changing economy and how things - overcame them before leaving the.crowd like automation will affect the future job with a quote of hers. “ D on’t judge someone for how long it m arket, and-w hy the skills th at can be improved as a PTK member are, and Will takes to achieve their goals. So at all tim es before closing her speech by being a part o f an organization like Phi congratulating the inductees. • After the speeches attendees were left to mingle as the night wound to a close. It was one meant to honor past accomplishments, and to look forward to ail the opportunities the future may bring. One student who is now the public relationsOfficer of the local PTK chapter, Ryan Balderas, summed up neatly the benefits of join in g the honor ‘ society. “ I don’t want to base everything down to its q u an titative asp ects, but it i s ,” Balderas said. ’’Having som ething show that I’ m putting extra effort outside of my curriculars — outside of my academics — it means som ething to a lot of people.” Top, students are inducted into Phi Theta Kappa on May 15.
