NEWS 3 BY ALLIE PERKINS STAFF WRITER C lack am as C o m m u n ity C o llege is a sm all college that has a sm all student population, so it can be surprising to hear that there have been eight hit and runs on campus since September. Eight hit and runs involving cars, not people, since September may seem like a lot, but Thomas Sonoff, director of college safety, disagrees. “ We probably don’t have any higher rate of that incident happening compared to a shopping m all,” Sonoff said .. To help deter crim e, the college has installed dozens o f security cam eras around campus. As of right now, there are approximately 57 cam eras w o rk in g on the sch ool premises w ith plans to add more in the upcoming m onths. By the time the Dejardin Hall expansion is com p lete, C C C w ill have a total o f approximately 75 cam eras functioning around the three cam puses in Oregon City, W ilsonville and Harmony. “ The cameras don’ t cover all the areas on cam p us, so if an in cid ent occurs campus security w ill investigate/’ said Pete K andratieff, m anager o f college safety. “ Having more cameras on campus is a deterrent.” Kandratieff said if someone sees a h it and run incident, “ They want to contact college safety as Soon as possible. W e do like to get a word out so people can be aware of what goes on around them and report it. It’ s better to take your own notes and to call college safety.” Sonoff agreed. “ I f you see som ething occur in the p arking lo t lik e th a t, eith er call us right away or if you’re in an area where you’ re in a safe place, we don’t want you confronting somebody, but if you can get somebody’s vehicle license plate number, that’ s very helpful to u s,” Sonoff said. So n o ff and K andratieff said adding more cameras during the Dejardin Hall rebuild will help the campus in the future-. “ The addition of cameras will be very h e lp fu l/ ’ So n o ff said. “ W e ju st w ent through a big change w ith the college safety officers, so now we have college safety officers that are assigned to us specifically on cam pus for specifically different shifts for a six-m onth period at a tim e. Hopefully, people will see and recognize the officers over and over again, so they get familiar with the officers and get comfortable with th em .” Robert Keeler, a professor of political science, gave his opinion oh the camera installments, of which he Was previously unaware. “ I suspect the cameras may lower crime rate if it is made widely known that the cameras are present and in operation, but perhaps they won’t result in any great reduction in crim e,” K eeler said . “ I ’ m f l f l f l f l E | f l ^ f l f l f l | i f l S okay w ith h a v in g cameras on campus from a civil liberties s ta n d p o in t, b u t b elieve th ey w ill - ' only be effective as j 1 I W a crime deterrent if their presence is j known to people. | j I also w o n d er I about their cost- 1 effectiveness for 9 the college and .J th e c a m p u s f l com m unity.” f l C a m p u s ! safety can be | re a ch e d at f l 503-394-6650. u M H| r e w ta s iiiie PB i BBHBSBI w I bu il FREE TfiCO TUESDAYS ARE HERE!
