A QUIET PLACE FRIGHTENS HORROR FANS

will be hard pressed
nowadays. Most horror movies rely
on loud noises, jum p scares and a
scarcity of plot. However when a good
movie like A Quiet Place comes along
and reminds us what good horror can
do, the film deserves recognition.
Movies like these are clearly created
with passion, and the passion shows
in quality.
, Directed by John Krasinski, this is
his third difectoriardebut on the big
screen, and his first foray into the
horror, genre. Set in a world where
horrific alien beasts have driven
humanity to the brink of extinction,
the story follows one family amongst
the ruins o f society. This fa m ily
consists of a father, a mother, and
three children. This family has been
able to survive by living in total
silence, only-using sign language
andmakirig the smallest amount of
noise when required. From the very
first scene, the' stakes are set, and
very high at that. The audience feels
the tension of this fam ily’s struggle,
and i t persists the entire film . While
there are a couple short moments-of
reprieve, the film keeps you on the
edgeof your Seat.
Everyone in m y theatre was so
drawn in, people were refraining
from eating their popcorn out of
fear that the creatures m ight hear
the ¡crunching. T h at’ s actually a
huge positive point of this film , it’ s
actually scary. The fear o f any sound
potentially meaning certain death is
simple but perfectly executed. There
wasn’t a single- scene where anyone
U n the theater made a sound during
the length of the film , and that really
says something about the impact of
your movie. By the end of the film ,
everything builds to a truly explosive
finale.
My favorite part of this film is the
ending actually, and not because it
was over. The confidence in ending
the film this way, and only clocking
in at around 90 m inutes running
tim e shows you Krasinski had a
clear cut vision of what he wanted to
accomplish in this movie.
Only a couple glaring issue bothered
me during this film, one of them being
the audio. Almost every moment that
is supposed to frighten the audience is
undercut with a loud banging noise in
an attempt to heighten the intensity
Of the scare. W hy they chose to do
this makes sense, but in practice it
actually took me out of a few scenes
and reminded me: I was in a theater,
watching a film .
A few o f the scary m o m en ts
I cou ld n’ t even hear w hat I was
supposed to be hearing because the
clanging sound over com pensated
way too m uch. The other problem
with this film is the gaps in logic.
If you start to Teally think about it,
this family isn’t making very clever
choices, and for some this may be a
huge detractor.
Even with these flaws, I was engaged
the w hole ride, and if you w ant a
movie that grabs your attention and
holds it until the credits roll, this is
rovided by Paramount Pictures Corporation
