Matmen stay unbeaten in duals BY DOUG FRY When a program has had as m uch success as th e Clackam as w restling team h as, the seaso n e x p ectatio n s are alw ays high. Com ing o ff their third consecutive National Dual title, the Cougars look to claim a four-peat and add another team title to their resume. T hey are o ff to a good start, w ith a record o f 2 -0 in duals after d efeating the reinstated Eastern Oregon University M ountaineers on Saturday, N ov. 5, in Randall H all w ith a team score o f 32- 7. The team w oo eight o f ten m atches contested, including a win by fall from 174 lb. freshm an Colt Doyle in 1:15 over EOU’ s Britton Hanson. This year’ s team features a mix of young and experienced talent. Clackam as had a top recruiting class, according to head coach Josh Rhoden. “ David and Kurt, both of those guys will get starts,” said Rhoden. “ We had the fifth best recruiting class in non-Division I schools, so D iv isio h ll, III, NAIA, Junior College, and th a t’ s like 195 schools. Campbell has similar goals for his first year o f college wrestling. “ I exp ect to m ake so m e-n o ise for colleges out there, also ju st be a hard w orker,” said Cam pbell, w ho w restled in an exhibition m atch Saturday. “ W hat I w ant to do th is year is be a national cham pion.” He has a plan to make it happen. “ I want to come in w restling to ugh ,” said C am p b ell. “ I was num ber one in California and if you’re from California you’re supposed to be todgh, act tough, wrestle hard, you know how to Wrestle, just keep w restling, just get it .” Division I transfers Josh Reyes (Boise State University) and Ralph Tovar (Grand Canyon U niversity) add a com petitive edge. Returning A ll-A m erican H aszell West would like to see the team continue the success with high hopes for another historic year. “ We should definitely get the four-peat in national duals this year and win the national title overall,” W est said. “ Last year we had the b est overall record in Clackamas history for dual m eets. I want to just try and keep that going.” West, who at 197 pounds defeated EOU’s Braeden P hillips 8-3 on Saturday, has some personal goals as well. “ I ’m trying to w in the national title before I move o n ,” he said. “ I just want to hold m yself to a high standard. D on’ t ever go on to the mat unprepared, always go out ready, never go out and have a sloppy m atch .” Having goals is important, but without a plan, they can get lost during the grind of the season. Rhoden and his staff believe their new outlook, w hich is to work hard but not overdo train in g, w ill lead to a successful year. “ It’ s so cliche, but it’ s honestlypart of what we think is going to help in terms o f not m aking the year seem so lo n g ,” said Rhoden. “ Wrestling typically seems to be that way, it ’s land of a grind. So trying to s a y , ’Let’ s look at each day like it’ s own thing and be as good as we can for today.’ That’ s truly what we’ve been preaching a lot of. I’ m excited to see how that turns into results.” West’s experience means he knows how to balance work and play during practice. “ We like to keep it light and be joking but we know how to separate the tw o,” said W est. “ We try to have fun w ith it. I th in k having fu n in w restling, is key, because wrestling is a hard sport. If you’re not having fun w ith it, a lot o f guys are not going to la st.” The Cougars’ next hom e dual meet will be o n D ec. 2 w hen they host H igh line Com m unity College.
