MAY 13,2015 • CLACKAMAS PRINT Relay knowledge: howto follow track by Jack Spencer CCC runner Ericka Pengelly hands off the baton to teammate Hannah Waite during the Southern Region Championships on May 9. Scoreboards are an in d i cator to both spectator and participant of w ho’s winning. Some sports use th e score- board more than others. Bas ketball, for instance, is a sport in which the players need to be able to see it during the game. The scoreboard shows the score, how much tim e is left in a game, and in some cases even statistics th at may only be interesting to a select few. Now we come across the curious case of track and field. M ost venues th a t hold events for track and field are fit w ith a scoreboard. Only th ing is, there is no way to display track and field events on that scoreboard. W ith the countless num ber of events th a t are p a rticip a te d in at these com petitions and the way in which they are scored, the JumboTron at Jerry World would have trouble showing you who is winning. How exactly are you sup posed to figure out the score? Well there’s a couple o f d if ferent ways. First off, the an nouncer. Now you’re probably thinking this is amazing, some guy over the P.A. telling you the results o f the event you just watched; wrong. Most an nouncers have a select number of players th a t they are sup posed to memorize; there are hundreds of participants so it takes some tim e for them to figure out who just ran. Also it takes more time to actually get the results to the booth so th at they can be announced. By then the next event is under way and lots of people have a very confused look upon th eir face. All except fo r the athletes, w ho are clearly ac climated to the process. “They do a really good job around here,” said Clackamas Community College track and field thrower Courtney Pardee. There definitely is a* large w ork crew making sure th a t everything is running very smoothly, so it must just be the difficulties of revealing results to the crowd. All the athletes seemed to have their routine, usually getting a fair amount of downtim e in between events to rest and check their results, which leads me to the second way they are displayed, on the wall. After each event, the NWAC w ould run around to gather accurate tim es or distances and hustle to get them post ed on th e walls around the stadium. This would seem like a tool meant for the partici pants so they can see what just happened; it’s probably pret ty hard to count when you’re running th a t quickly. Also, the walls that had the scores displayed were surrounded by athletes checking their re sults. Some athletes prefer to wait until the event is finished to check the results. “I like to always be looking around the track and seeing what my team’s doing and if I can cheer them on in any way, but ultim ate goal is to focus on w hat I’m doing and concentrate to do the best th a t, can," said CCC track and field decathlon com p etito r Zack Supple. Trying to in te rp re t these results was a little d ifficult because there was a lot of unfam iliar language to me. Language like heat, fly and P.R. (personal record) were all terms that were displayed and also throw n around in conversation by the athletes. “People ask me that all the time, like w hat’s a P.R.,” said CCC track and field throw er Rachel Mckinnis. The language was a little d ifficult to understand, b ut thanks to the athletes it was fairly easy to pick up. As far as reading the scores go, might be better just to leave that for them to interpret. FIVE GUYS BURGERS and FRIES Open 7 Days a Week • 10:30AM-11:00PM Now Serving Milkshakes!
