She remembers Bert the Turtle, who was a tool that the govemment.used to teach children how to duck arid cover in case o f the atomic bomb.- “We used to have to hide under qur desks like that, like they show in the film and it was terrifying,” D ’Agostino said. “And they had that cute little turtle tolling us what to do and I think the turtle was sup posed to be reassuring somehow to. kids but somehow w e knew that this was totally terrifying. And the turtle didn’t help, it just made us feel like everyone w as lying to us.” The collage shows videos o f the atomic bomb going off, kids hiding under school desks and ends with drawings by teenagers who sur vived die World War II bombings o f Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the artist reception students piled into the Alexander Gallery to hear what D ’Agostino had to say about her work, and she answered student questions. Kate Simmons, gallery director for the Alexander Gallery, said, “I wel come you to explore these five experimental videos and as well go over to Maiylhurst’s Art Gym to see her (D’Agostino’s) retrospec tive. It’s a collection o f her work.” Part time student Rebekah Kamierowicz said, “so far I think it’s pretty cool. It makes your m ind think.” D ’Agostino said, “I hope people go out and see :1hat [show at Marylhurst]. T he show at Marylhurst is a combination o f a retrospective o f new work and there is a lot more. A fter boiling the noodles and adding the flavor packet, rem ove the noodles (saving the broth) and pan fiy the noodles in a little bit o f cooking oil (about 1 tsp). Save the broth, boiling and cooking it dow n (reducing) until it is a little thicker — this m aytake aw hile. It’s okay if the broth does not thicken— use ft anyway and m ove on to tire n e x t step. , . W hile you wait; hunt for and add any\variety o f veg etable. O ne suggestion1 from a colleague: try adding “Pork Form osa” otherwise know n as dried pork shreds, avai lable at m ost A sian food stores. Also try tofu strips, sliced hard boiled eggs, crumbled bacon. U se your imagination^ • • • U se different types o f cheeses and different types o f breads. D O N 'T grill your sandwich on HIGH heat, always grill your sandwiches on M ED IU M heat. Try coating the outside o f the sandwich wit hsw eet cream butter. Add tom ato, avocado, onion, bacon and anything else you normally enjoy on your sandwiches. Perfected Macaroni & Cheese (from a box): Other variations include: • • Chili Mac: o One can o f your favorite c h ili,. ■ H eat chili while you cook noodles. o M ix cheese powder into chili before stirring into the pasta. o No need for butter and milk. • Tuna Casserole Mac: o M ake as directed. o v Add can o f tuna. o H a lf package frozen (or can) o f peas, heated to desired temperature. • M eat-Lover’s.Mac: o Slice up hot dogs, Spam or any o f your favorite pre-packaged m eats to add to your Perfected Mac & Cheese. , • • • Any boxed macaroni & cheese brand can be used. Kraft is the brand used in this recipe. Cook the m ac & cheese as- directed, paying extra close attention to not overcook the pasta. Instead o f milk, try an equabfrieasirfm grittof^Our cream.
