BUDGET: College asks for staff input
Continued from Page 1
Input and ideas from the staff may be considered by
the Budget Committee but the C C C board o f education
will have the final sore when it decides next ytar’s budget
thus spring. T he tuition hike is pretty imminent along with
these huge payments that need to be made. T he college
will likely look to future hikes in these fees to supplement
a bleak outlook in revenue sources The failure ol last years
bond measure and the questionable possibility o f voters
passing any future bonds make for difficult budget deci
sions in the fururc
However that financial, vote goes, Courtney Wilton,
vice president o f college services and Elizabeth Lundy,
vice president o f instructional services, seemed to project
' optimistic feelings that the college would be able to
: the budget work, while satisfying the overall goals the
college has to meet the needs ol students and sufl *Wu are
a people business,” they both said at one point during the
forum.
Adam Hall, full umc Faculty Association President
and C C C m ath instructor for 14 years, was at the budget
forums and feels that the forums are a way to
produc-
rive discussion and input developed from
but with
a caveat. ‘W e need to get enough people there,” he said.
Past forums have had more participants that resulted in
a more dynamic discussion, according to Hall. “During
past forums we had subst.tnn.dlv more participants Lets
it, if were only getting ten to 30 to come, m at means
d u t ¡is not going to be a wav to communicare to all staff
fy,” he said.
t Howley, chair o f the horticulture department,
asked W ilton how die college would go about planning
and passing a successful bona measure
“W e went out last M ay and w e basically got killed,”
W ilton said. “Its likely we are not going out for a new bond
measure in the near future. W e could probably go out in a
few years. Hopefully the environment will be better then.”
In spite o f the hard budget decisions the college is
1 a productive discussion that
t hearted and casual. There were many audience
chuckles that were shared by the speakers even as serious
issues and concerns were aired.
: W ilton concluded the forum by reassuring the partici
pants d u t the staffat die college was doing a gtxxl job in
spite o f some tough circumstances.
“We’d like to reaffirm the good job that 99 percent o f
our employees are doing. We’v e got some issues we are
going to have deal with,” he said, t don’t want people to
e the worlds going to end.”
