6 Clackamas Print Sports Wednesday, May 2, 2007 T Santos, Cristofaro K opposition Frank Jordan | The Clackamas Print The Clackamas softball team had a 5-2 week, losing games to Lower Columbia College and Mt. Hood CC, while sweeping doubleheaders against Southwestern Oregon CC and Clark College. Renee Santos set a new school record for strikeouts in a single season dur ing a Friday win over SW Oregon. Santos struck out nine Laker hitters during CCC’s 8-0 win, giving her 224 strikeouts on the season, breaking the mark of 223 K’s set by Holly Marlow during the 2004 season. Santos ran her record to 14-2 for the season, although she left after 4 1/3 -innings due to soreness in her pitch ing arm. Janelle Cristofaro finished out the Cougar victory in game one, and then tossed a complete game in the second game, a 12-0 Cougar romp. # X Cristofaro struck out five and gave up only ! one hit in game two, while Jessica Schell and ! Sam Daline each contributed three hits to the g KBSF e Cougar offense. Saturday, the Cougars took on the Chemeketa Storm and. got more strong pitching from Santos and Cristofaro, while Schell and Heather Rightley helped supply the offense in a 6-3 and 3-2 doubleheader J sweep. ! Santos struck out 16 Storm hitters g > in the game one victory, .running her Ik record to 15-3 and increasing her Ilk single-season strikeout record set the ! day before. Schell hit a towering !^Bl home run during a five-run sec- ! ond inning to set the pace for the ! Cougars. ! Cristofaro ran her record to ! jB^^R 11 -2 with a complete-game four- ! j ^^BBB hitter while striking out three # in game two, as Clackamas / Jg pushed across a fifth-inning # run to break a 2-2 tie and , ^B send the Storm back to Salem with a 3-2 loss. The Cougars played host to the defending NWAACC champions J from Lower Columbia g College yesterday; 1 results were not g available -¡at press; time. Friday, Clackamas goes to Gresham to take on second-place Mt. Hood CC in a key Southern Division matchup. The Cougars lead the Lady Saints by two games in division play entering this week’s games. Saturday, CCC travels to Salem to play Chemeketa in a doubleheader on the Chemeketa campus. “We are still playing very well, although we have had some ups-and-downs over the last week,” said Head Coach Jessica Farnsworth. “Both of our pitchers are feeling the effects of a long season, but they are hang ing in there. Renee [Santos] has had some soreness in her arin, but we will rest her on practice days. Her arm is not a major concern at the moment. Big man Brian P Freeman goes up strong in a game earlier this year. Brian Freeman, the 6’10” sophomore center, has finally signed a letter of intent. He has committed to play for Long Beach State University. The Albany native led the Cougs to an NWAACC championship this last season, also compiling an all time school best record of 29-4, which included going undefeated in the Southern Region. , Freeman was named the MVP of both the Southern Region and the NWAACC Tournament. In his two seasons at Clackamas, his teams went a combined 53-11, winning over 80%f of their games. Freeman was actively recruited by more than 30 DI schools. He will be joining a program that went 24-8 last season, and reached the NCAA Tournament. Freeman’s teammate David “sharp shoot ing” Cernin also has been signed and will continue his college basketball career at Cal Baptist University.
