8 • ^t^LA CK AM A sPrint Maj 18, 2005 FeatiA Experiencing culture the world ove Foreign language department offers several summer tri CJ Ciaramella The Clackamas Print The foreign langu ,ge depart ment is offering a .vealth of exchange programs and travel opportunities in the upcoming months to various locales such as Italy, Spain, Mexico and Germany. The Italy trip commences in the fall of the next school year; it will send participat ing students to Florence, Italy - one of the great centers of the Renaissance. The ancient city is home to some of the most treasured artwork and architec ture in the world. Students will spend an entire fall semester in the city, taking classes and absorbing Italian culture. The trip starts Sept. 25, and students will return Dec. 8. The Italy trip is sponsored not only by Clackamas Community College, but many other commu nity colleges around the state. “We belong to a consortium of community colleges that sponsors trips to London and Florence,” explained Robin Danchok, foreign language department secretary. Also planned is an excursion to Barcelona, Spain. Barcelona is located in the Catalonia region of Spain and is the second larg est city in the country behind Madrid. The trip will consti tute an intensive Spanish course taught by Irma Bjerre, the chair of the foreign language depart ment. Students will study at the International House, located in the heart of the city. The trip runs from June 20 through July 8. Besides letting students bone up on their Spanish skills, Barcelona is also a tourist’s dream. As the foreign language department’s website describes, “The Gothic Quarter, the Roman ruins, the Ramblas, the Picasso and Dali museums, the Miro Foundation, the architecture of Gaudi and of the modernist period, the Olympic Port, four kilometers of beach—and the enticing beaches of the Costa Brava or the ski slopes of the Pyrenees are both within easy reach of the city.” There are other trips planned for students who wish to study abroad during the summer. One exchange program is going to Cuernavaca, Mexico from June 17 through July 16. Another is going to Hanover, Germany and is running from June 9 through 24.
