LACKAMASPflflt February 9, 2005 ‘Moving’ trio performs at Ree Student offered 'classic’ prices at Brahms Festival Cassandra Mathiasen The Clackamas Print The Kavafian-Schub- Shifrin Trio took the stage this week with their chamber music performance at Reed College. The ’ concert was put on by Chamber Music Northwest and included Ani Kavafian on violin, Andre-Michel Schub on piano, and David Schufrin on clarinet. This recital also served as the debut perfor mance for the three, who before had been sought after soloists and friends for 25 years, playing as a group. David Schifrin is Chamber Music Northwest’s .artistic director, as well as the third member of the trio. “The spontaneity, excite ment, and fun we have playing together is beyond what we ’ ever anticipated,” he said. The program for the perfor mance included'pieces from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schumann, and Béla Bartók; all beautifully inter preted by the musical ensem ble. His over-zealous emot ing was a constant distrac tion for the eyes, even amidst the overwhelmingly beautiful music, constantly looking as if he were in pain or in the throes of a bout of constipation; this in addition to Kavafian who, whenever not playing, would sway back and forth as if she were entranced by the stage lighting. 'Nonetheless, all of the mem- bers of the trio are renowned and established musicians. Ani Kavafian has played as a soloist with the New York philharmonic, as well as hav ing performed for three dif ferent presidents in the White House.
