A FREE STUDENT P U B LI CAT I O N New name clarifies purpose to community Renamed 'Campus Safety' responds to last term's feedback Karlin Johnson N ews E ditor In response to a survey and four open forums held last term by the Public Safety Task Force, Public Safety will be undergoing many changes in the upcoming weeks. The survey and forums were focused on learning what makes students and faculty feel safe on campus. With 340 responses to the survey and 75 students and staff in atten dance at the forums, the Task Force received many positive suggestions. Public Safety will be changing their tide to Campus Safety due to past confusion over the name. With three campuses to patrol, officers have been driving down main roads like 82nd Avenue in vehicles labeled with the unintentionally misleading phrase, “Public Safety.” “We ate not Public Safety officers,” said Bill Leach, Associate Dean of Campus Services. “We thought [the name change] would better clarify for people the role that we serve.” The department is now in the process of having logos on uniforms and vehicles changed to display their new title. With the retirement of Chief Larry Dexheimer, Campus Safety will not be filling the position with a new chief, but rather employing a full-time classified officer with prior experience in law enforcement. Part of the role of this officer will be to work with the new Cadet program, which was a direct result of the forums, according to Leach. The program will consist of students from • Clackamas’ Criminal Justice Transfer Day is tomorrow, Jan. 29,2004 Department. These Cadets will get first hand experience in assisting with parking lot duties, such as opening and starting vehicles, answering questions for students and staff on campus, providing walkouts to cars at night when requested and issuing parking citations when appropriate. “It's a great opportunity for criminal jus tice students, and for us as a college,” said Leach. Leach will be working with Dick Ashbaugh, department chair for criminal jus tice, to organize and map out staffing during the new changes to Campus Safety. Establishing a committee is another new project for Campus Safety. The Campus Safety Committee would give regular input toward bettering the Campus Safety program by hearing and ruling on traffic appeals, reviewing Campus Safety logs and discussing concerns and staffing issues. “We will look at the major security issues that a campus of our size needs to look at,” said Leach. “We want a voice from various groups on campus.” The committee will consist of student and faculty representatives, officer represen tatives and representatives from the Harmony and Wilsonville campuses. Campus Safety is now in the process of all these changes, some of which will become visible in the next two weeks. “It’s going to be a wonderful program. I think it will set a model for other community colleges, especially with the cadet program,” said Leach. “I'm really excited about it.” Questions or comments may be directed to Bill Leach in his office in B101, by phone at ext. 2385 or by sending an email to ''bdlliaml@clackamas.edu.
