The Clackamas Print W Artist: Beh K\A>elfêï | Album: Sha Sha LUKE MAHAN Clackamas Print A&EEd/tor ELISABETH MEYER Clackamas Print For the next three weeks, the community is free to enjoy the “Word & Form" exhib it, now up in the Pauling Callery. The art is a Joining of poetry and ceramic pieces. “The inspiration started with the poets. I asked them to write a riddle,”said English Instructor Kate Cray, who collaborated with Art Instructor Katy McFadden. 'The ceram ics people responded to something in the poems.” The students Joined at a reception for the exhibit, which took place last Wednesday. This project is a spin-off of "Word and Hand," a larger exhibit that includes artists from all over Oregon. The “Word & Form” exhibit will be on display until Feb. 7. Making his solo debut, Ben Kweller strikes a chord with the 2002 release of “Sha Sha.” This poppy, melodic album is sure to be only the first in a long line from the 20-year-old from Texas. Those who know a little about Ben Kweller simply because of the single “Wasted & Ready” that got a tiny bit of airtime on MTV need to take a deeper dive into the realm that is “Sha Sha.” Kweller does a wonderful job of mixing up Weezeresque rock with softer »Ben Foldsish sounds. The influences of the sound are prevalent. It opens with the title track, a quick, pointed pop song. My favorite track, “In Other Words,” begins as a beautiful melody complete with violin and cello. It sounds almost more like Ben Folds than Ben Folds himself (think “Brick”). It then transitions into louder, harder piano, and. a bit of banjo, reminiscent of early Elton John. Maybe “Bennie and the Jets?” The piano is not the only thing Kweller rocks out on. On most of the tracks he jams out on the guitar. The switch between the two doesn’t interrupt the flow of the music in the slight est. The catchiness of this pop- filled album is undeniable. After a single listen, you’ll be hum ming or singing the songs left and right. Most likely you’ll be ok with that because “Sha Sha” is, simply put, good music. Kweller recently hit up “Austin City Limits” and proved himself to be quite a crowd pleaser. Those interested in see ing Kweller perform live will be happy to learn that he will be making a one-night appearance on Feb. 15 at the B Complex, and it won’t break the bank - $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Hippie spirit plus big business equals love Editor-in-Chief “Two Weeks Notice,” is a romantic comedy that dramatizes the effects of throwing a do-gooder hippie lawyer and a hard-core cor porate man into first a business rela tionship, then friendship, and possi bly even love. George Wade (Hugh Grant), is a wealthy corporate guru who is in the business of building for large profit. Lucy Kelson (Sandra Bullock), is a hippie activist lawyer who lies on streets to block Wade’s big business progress. She is deter mined to continue to do so until she makes a difference. On a mission to save her home town Community Center from being destroyed by Wade’s corpora tion, Lucy agrees to work for Wade as his lawyer in exchange for his promise to leave the building intact. However, instead of acting as the Harvard lawyer that she is, she acts as his personal assistant, helping him decide every detail of his life down to which pants he’s going to wear. After a few years of fighting fashion rather than fighting in court, Lucy gives George her two weeks notice. Because of his attachment and needy behavior, he requires Lucy to hire her own replacement. Surprise, George wants only female applicants, and he hires a looker. Does Lucy get jealous? “Two Weeks Notice” shows how two very different people can bring the best out of one another. Bullock pulls off portraying a hard-nosed woman who refuses, reveal her romantic emotions, and Grant con vincingly shows just how arrogant and conceited men can really be. As the film progresses, so do the characters. Although some popular review ers might give this film a low rating, I greatly enjoyed this film. It made me laugh on several occasions, and I almost wanted to cry at times. Those of you who like Chinese food will definitely get a kick out of the way Lucy triumphs over loneliness. “Two Weeks Notice” is rated PG-13. Are you sick and tired of outrageous bank fees?
