A
KNIGHT Pnruc THE IVHQQLE
MAGGIE JIRASEK
Feature Editor
A Knight's Tale, a movie in
spired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s
Canterbury Tales, is coming to
Oregon theatres May 11, pro-
jecting a new spin on the
Middle Ages in an amusing
way.
The movie is a medieval ro
mantic-adventure with an
added touch of humor. Heath
Ledger portrays a young
squire, William Thatcher, who
works his way up the jousting
circuit after taking on a fake
identity. As Ulrich Von
Lichtenstein, William sets out
to achieve his lifelong dream of
being a knight, or as his father
says, “to change his stars.”
While winning numerous
jousting and swordplay compe
titions held across Eu
rope, William excels
at jousting and de
feats many knights.
With his two pals,
Roland and Wat,
who accompany
him on this
journey as
varlets,
Wi 11 i am
manages
to keep
his true
identity a se
cret from the aristoc
racy he is rubbing shoulders
with. Joining William and his
friends is a crazy, gambling-ad
dicted scribe named Geoffrey Heath Ledger (William), Mark
Addy (Roland), Paul Bettany
Chaucer.
Competing in numerable (Geoffrey Chaucer), Rufus
events, William catches the eye Sewell (Count Adhemar),
of the beautiful princess Shannyn Sossamon (Jocelyn)
Jocelyn and be and Alan Tudyk (Wat). '
By incorporating 1970’s mu
comes the rival of
the snide Count sic in his medieval story,
Adhemar on both Helgeland gives the movie a
the field and as a funny touch. You get to hear
pusuer
of Bachman Turner Overdrive arid
Jocelyn’s affec Queen as well as KC and the
Sunshine Band in a story that
tion.
A
Knight’s is set in the 1370’s. A particu
Tale, a Columbia lar scene shows William at
Pictures production, tending a feast at a castle
was filmed in the Czech when, while dancing with
Republic and directed Jocelyn, the medieval music
and screen written by Brian and dancing transforms into
Helgeland whose previous disco and everybody starts to
movies have mostly been thrill boogie.
Another funny component of
ers or crime stories. Starring are
a /^ ec
the story is the character o
Geoffrey Chaucer, who i.
known as one of the most fa
irious writers in history
Helgeland implies that ;it i
Chaucer’s journeys with Will
iam that later inspired him ti
write The Canterbury Tales.
Helgeland did a good job in
corporating historic figures ii
the movie including Edward
The Black Prince of Wales
who has a few brief scenes ii
the movie.
A Knight’s Tale is an amus
ing movie and will most likel]
make you laugh if you don’
mind a literature piece turnei
into a joke. Although the movi
is rated PG-13, it does contaii
some nudity as well as sex-re
lated dialogue.
