Webb, an art instructor at Port land Community College, has 15 of his most recent works on loan at Clackamas from Jan. 16 through Feb. 9. The display consists of his unique still lifes and landscapes. Some whimsical, these acrylic paintings are luminous large can vases of wood. Webb paints with metallic and interference paints over a back ground of gold leaf. This tech nique gives the finished artworks a shimmery, iridescent quality remi niscent of an abalone shell. One becomes acutely aware of th is tech- nique in the painting “High Jive” in which the clouds actually change color depending upon the viewing angle. During the installation of the ex hibit, Webb hesitated to classify his paintings into a specific cat egory, though he does admit some similarities to specific art styles. “There are certainly some refer ences to Surrealism,” he says. “They are random selections of figures doing odd things in odd places.” Inspired by the Rocky Moun tains, Webb often features white capped peaks and snowfields in his art. According to Webb, painting landscapes with mountains became a way for him to stay in touch with Montana. TAM OLIVER A&E Editor Snatch, a very funny film about a diamond heist, opens Friday, Jan. 19 in local theaters. Before rushing out for tickets, you need to know that the film didn’t get its R rating for sexual content. If you don’t like abundant, yet creative, profanity or blood- splattered humor, it might be a good idea for you to pick another movie for the weekend. On the other hand, if you got a kick out of Pu/p Fiction or Fargo, it might be what you are looking for. Set in London, this dark comedy contains a large number of bad guys with names like Bullet Tooth Tony, Boris the Blade, Franky Four Fingers and Brick Top; yet each character is introduced in a dy namic fashion leaving no confu sion as to who is who. For example, Bullet Tooth Tony is so hard to kill with bullets that when he was shot in the mouth a couple of times, the bullets simply replaced his own teeth. After the initial introductions, the Mickey O'Neil, played by Brad Pitt, retires to his corner in a bare-knuckles fist fight. big questions become who will wind up with the 86 carat diamond, who will be left alive with all their limbs intact and who will be left standing in the fourth round of the illegal, bare-knuckles fight. There are a few minor issues as well, such as what will ultimately happen to the dog’s squeaky toy, is it pos sible to trust a pig farmer and will CORINNE RUPP Opinion editor Aries: Take that leap of faith you have been thinking of. You will either land on your feet or learn how to fly. Taurus: Get comfortable. Loosen your belt. Say what you feel and don't apologize for it. This is your week to get away with the truth. Gemini: The devil is in the details for you this week Gemini. You can’t examine the fine print close enough, but your patience will bez evaluate your goals. rewarded. Libra: Stop stifling your own Cancer: Don’t worry Cancer. It’s creative energy. Don’t talk about what you are going to do. Do it! them, not you. Leo: Dramatic whirlwinds will keep your head spinning for weeks. Enjoy it while it lasts, but remember the old saying about playing with fire. Virgo: This is a good week to take some time for yourself and Scorpio: You seem to have the Midas touch this week. Try to do some good with your magic pow- ers-for yourself and others. Sagittarius: Don’t let people suck your energy this week. Remember Nancy Reagan and “Just Say No.” Mickey O’Neil (the Gypsy played by Brad Pitt) ever change his cruddy underwear. Snatch is written and directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Benicio Del Torro, Dennis Farina, Vinnie Jones, Brad Pitt, Rade Sherbedgia and Ja son Statham. The film starts with a rather mild murder, by comparison, but then accelerates so that it even tually goes so completely over the top during one killing that the ac tors appear to be laughing along with the audience at the absurdity. The laughs come fast and fre quent. And, like Fargo, if you find yourself laughing when something brutally awful happens to some one, you can find some self-re- demption in knowing that the char acter was not the type to seek or benefit from rehabilitation in this lifetime. Snatch, though not quite the same caliber 'as Pulp Fiction or Fargo, is nevertheless well acted and enjoyable for some audiences. It just isn’t for everyone. Capricorn: It will be easier to re lease any old animosities you may still be harboring this week. Try to let go. Aquarius: If you were any hotter this week Aquarius, you would be on fire. Salsa dance through the rest of the week spreading your love around. Pisces: Traditionally you have been followers and listeners. Now is the time to be leaders and speak ers. Be tactful yet bold.
