_____ z_ Sports TI he CI ac I camas P rìnt WEdNEsdAy, N ovemòer 15, 2000 NWAACC: Clackamas wins despite snow and ice Continued from page 1 “Every meet we were getting closer and closer to each other in the race,” said Sophomore Sarah Block. “Seeing everyone that close felt really good.” With both teams winning their championship, Clackamas easily dominated the Com bined Championship by a good 16 points. “To win the Co-ed Combined after losing it by two points last year is nice,” said Hickey. “That’s the one I want to win every time, because that shows who is the most dominant one in the conference.” Dodge, who had been a fa vorite to take the race, finished 5th overall last year. Along with the rest of the team Dodge came out with a win win atti tude. “Our team was really pumped up for it, we knew we could win,” said Dodge. “There was never any doubt in our minds. We fought through, and we did it two years in a row.” The ice, snow and freezing temperatures were in no way a deterrent for the determined Clackamas team. “Everybody thought since we were the ones from [Clacka mas} that we would be the ones not used to [the weather],” said Block. “We were the ones out in the snow first, on the starting lines 10 minutes before the other teams came out from huddling up inside.” The Cougars have come a long way as a team, helping each other every step of the way. With camp-outs, little functions and running as a team, they have formed a bond that may last a lifetime. “We’re so tightly knit,” said Dodge.’ “It’s always been fun, just the greatest time and to be able to repeat is just incred ible.” Hickey’s being named NWAACC coach of the year has continued the tradition passed on to him by his predecessor Mike Hodges who helped the team be named program of the 90’s. “To have my mentor Mike Hodges come up to me and give me a hug and tell me he’s proud of me is a big deal,” said Hickey. “It’s exciting for me to be a part of this.” Ryan Mastropietro, Matt So- losabal, C. J. Savage, and Jonah Normand all had strong races fin ishing 8, 10, 11, and 12 respec tively, to help the men devastate the competition. Wednesday pitted the women volleybailers at home against Chemeketa, for the last league, game ofthe2000- 2001 season. This game was a good mea suring point for Clackamas, who will be going to the NWAACC Championships, appearing in the Southern Region’s 4th place spot. The games were pretty evenly played, but Chemeketa ended up the winner, 12-15,11-15,15-12and2-15. The Cougars got an all-out perfor mance by Eryn Wagner, who had 11 kills, 2 service aces and 21 digs.
