The Saints took the first game 15-2. “The whole problem was serve receive,” said Head Coach Kathy Woods. “We just didn’t get our feet there to pass the ball.” The Cougars bit back in the sec ond game jumping to an early 6-0 lead. The Saints rallied back and caught the Cougars at eight all. Communication began to break down again, with the Cougars al lowing the Saints to come back for a 15-11 win. The dispirited Cougars never re gained momentum as they were toppled in game 3 by the Saints 15- 5, sweeping the Cougars at home. The Cougars’ loss to Linn- Benton Wednesday and the sub sequent loss to the Saints puts the Cougar record at 5-5, knocking them back to 4th place in the Southern Region. Their current record clinches a spot in the North West Athletic Association of Com munity Colleges (NWAACC) cham pionships. “We don’t have to win, we can keep working on it with our goal towards the NWACC,” com mented Woods. “We have three weeks to prepare for it, so no pres sure in those three weeks.” Eryn Wagner and Lisa Free led the Cougars both offensively and defensively against Linn- Benton Wednesday. Wagner had 14 kills and 19 digs, while Free had 12 kills, 20 digs and one ace. Cristina Merril had a great offen sive game against the Saints with 10 kills. Misty Bernhardt’s outstanding performance, filling in for Shelly Brennan at the middle block po sition, earned her the Clackamas player of the week award. JASON LINGEL Sports Editor It was just another day at the races for the Cougars Cross Country team this weekend as the Women took second and the Men took third at the Bigfoot Open in Spokane, WA. “By our standards, which were set to be extremely high, we had kind of a down week,” claimed Head Coach Mike Hickey of the men, even though the they placed 2nd at the community college level. “We ran about 30 seconds off of what we are capable of.” The men placed 3rd out of 14 overall, being beaten only by Eastern Oregon University and Spokane Community College. The Cougars beat out three community colleges and nine university level teams. Hickey blaimed the down week to a tough training sched ule the two weeks prior. “We trained hard the week before and I felt that this would happen,” said Hickey. “Some times you have to sacrifice middle of the season meets, or even the beginning of the sea son meets, for the late season meets. You don’t always show everything you have.” The women had a good meet beating out Clark on the tiebreaker for second place. Four Cougar runners finished in the top ten and all seven run ners finished before Clark’s top five. “We have a very deep womens team, we just need a couple of front runners to step up,” said Hickey. “We know we’re capable of doing it.” Both teams are ranked second in Northwest Athletic Associa tion of Community Colleges (NWAACC) standings accord ing to Hickey. Both teams are expected to have a big race in this coming weekend’s South ern Region Championship in Gresham. Clark will more than likely be the Cougars’ biggest competitor at this weekend’s race. Female runner of the week Tifany Winsor finished 8th in community colleges and 2nd for the Cougars. Male runner of the week Brad Brolin fin- ished first for the Cougars, 4th at the community college level and 14th over all. This was Brolin’s first number one spot for the Cougars. The men also had strong fin ishes by Allan Harrison and C. J. Savage. The women had strong finishes by Sarah Block, the number one for the Cou gars, and by Jennie Hardie and Mandy Block. Sherry Brenton is an up and coming runner, fin ishing strong in what is only her second race of the season and demonstrating she will be a key player in the up-coming championships.
