4 Feature Automatic toilets: For students on the run TI he CI ac I camas P rìnt WEdNEsdAy, OcTobER 6, 1999 MEGAN OLDENSTADT Managing Editor Clackamas has a new addition to campus. It’s not a new building or a statue. I’m not talking about new teachers or a mascot for that matter. It is something that makes everyday life a little bit simpler. One less thing for you to worry about during the day. Have you guessed yet? I’ll give you a few more clues. Plant services, the wonderful de partment that keeps the campus functioning (you will often see them wearing blue shirts), are the ones responsible for this new ad dition. It not only benefits them, but all of us as well. Still haven’t figured it out yet? Ok, I suppose I can just tell you. Visit the restrooms in the Community Center, the main floor of Randall and Barlow Hall and you will see what I am talking about. Auto matic Toilets! Aren’t you excited? Last year Plant Services did a test in the Community Center to see if the toilets were campus compatible. The restrooms were monitored and boy were they surprised with the results. The five to six calls per day that they used to get about plugged or over flowing toilets has now been re duced to none. Now if you haven’t been so lucky as to visit these restrooms, you are missing out. They make life so much easier. I will have to warn you: the initial shock, if you are not expecting the toilet to flush on its own, takes a little while to get over. Coming from a high school that was all automatic toi lets, they didn’t even faze me. Then, last year I came to Clackamas where 1 actually had to exert energy to flush the toilet myself. Not any more. Clackamas is heading into the technological age. The doors on campus open by themselves, you can take classes from your own living room and now you don’t have to flush the toilet. I’m sorry to say that those of you visiting the restrooms in other buildings are not yet able to enjoy the luxury. Maybe someday in the future, but there are no immedi ate plans for the other restrooms to be changed over. Sorry. Life is good. Did you know that automatic toilets require less maintenance, are plug- resistant and save water? It is very simple to convert the old flush mecha nism into these smart little new ones. Which probably brings up the question in your mind, how do they work? I could tell you, but then I would have to erase your memory. Rest assured they are smart, and the little guy who sits behind the little Tilack box and flushes the toilet for you is stuck in there for life (He won’t tell.) Oh yeah, and they are Y2K compliant.
