Students bring One Acts to life JERMEY STALLWOOD Feature Editor Three student directors will be displaying their talent in this term’s Student Directed One-Act Plays. The performances will be held in the McLoughlin Theater, Dec. 1,2 and 3 at noon, and 8 p.m. on Dec. 3. The productions are free to the public. John Renner, theater student and director, describes one one- act as “White trash comedy.” That play, Lone Star, written by James McClure and directed by Renner is set in “a trashy town in Texas after Vietnam.” A conflict arises in the back of a bar regard ing the theft and wreckage of a car. “There is a hierarchy of igno rance,” said Renner. These char acters are “drinking beer and eatin’ do-dads.” Ina Strauss, theater student, will be directing Mother Figure, a one-act written by Alan Ayckbourn from a book of five short plays called Confusions. Strauss describes Mother Figure as a “fast paced British farce about being a mother and being a kid.” It is a contemporary play, set in a modem English flat. The third production is a one- act written by theater major Ira Cortum. Titled Nails and Glass, Cortum describes the setting sim ply: “It just happens.” He further explained, “It’s like putting a car into first, leaving it in first, and redlining it until you smash into a brick wall.” Cortum $aid that Nails and Glass was inspired by his “love for absurdist theater.” Overall, the Student Directed One-Acts are varied and interest ing. Or, as Renner describes his offering, “Locker room trash com edy that will warm your heart.” TIMOTHY A.
