Wednesday, October 29, 1997 3 Cougars place second at Mt. Hood tournament JOHN THORBURN Sports Editor The Clackamas volleyball team has a new mascot. The Energizer Bunny. After a convincing win over Linn- Benton last Wednesday and a strong show ing at the Halloween Classic over the weekend, the Cougars keep going and going. On Wednesday, the Cougars hosted the Linn-Benton Roadrunners for a Southern Division matchup. In what marked the 26th consecutive league win, Clackamas [9-0,31-6] cruised to an easy 15-2,15-6, 15-3 victory. Amy Kraljev led attackers with 12 kills, Amy Felando had 28 assists, while Jen Johnson recorded five kills ap pearing in only one game for the Cougars. The Halloween Classic is one of the toughest tournaments in the northwest Its participants consisted of all of last year's Northwest Athletic Association of Com munity Colleges [NWAACC] tourna ment, as well as a number of schools that were invited. Over the weekend, Clackamas traveled to Mt. Hood Community College to take Sophomore Amy Felando has become one of the elite setters in the northwest and was given All-Tournament awards at the Halloween Classic this past weekend. part in the two-day long tournament. The Cougars opened the tournament with a tough Columbia Basin team but earned the 15-13, 8-15, 15-10 win. Clackamas then faced Highline in what looked to be more like a clinic put on by the Cougars as they won 15-1,15-2 to close out friday's matches. On Saturday, Clackamas started strong against Clark College 15-5,15-5 to claim the victory and close out pool play. Later in the morning, Head Coach Kathie Woods' team took on Malispina, a traditionally succesful team from Canada, and recorded a 15-9,4 5-8 win. In the afternoon, the Cou gars faced one of the top-ranked teams in the northwest in Skagit Valley College. Clackamas started slow early but quickly regrouped to win 15-6, 11-15, 15-8. The win over the Cardinals sent Clackamas into the tournament's championship match against Southern Division rival Chemeketa. The Cougars met the Chiefs earlier in the season in the first of two league games and outlasted the team from Salem to thrust Clackamas to the number one ranking which it now holds. Chemeketa, however, never faltered in the tournament's final match as Clackamas lost 9-15,7-15. "Going into the tournament being ranked number one," said Coach Woods, "people expected us to win, we expected to win. We played very well and we got second. It's close but what that does for us is moti vate us. We hadn't lost in over a month and sometimes you have a tendency to get a little casual about that so I'm glad that's our little extra kick in the behind to push us a little harder." Coach Kathie Woods went on to men tion the difficulty that comes with being a great team. "We know teams are after us," said Woods. "We talk about it but until we ex perience [losing], we might not know the realism of it. And that is real. We lost, we get it back together and now we win. I am not unhappy with the way we played the entire tournament. This is the best finish that Clackamas has ever had in this tourna ment Chemeketa is ranked number two so it was the best against the best and at this particular moment they played better." Kraljev recorded 47 kills and 35 digs in six matches while Christy Ekberg had 21 Freshman Corinne Lawrence stepped up her play during the Halloween Classic recording 19 kills, 18 digs, and five ace serves. kills and 59 digs, Felando had 134 assists and Mattye Walsworth made 61 digs. On Saturday morning, Michelle McKinney was in a car accident and Coach Woods didn't allow her to play in the day's opening match against Clark for precau tionary reasons. Freshman Corinne Lawrence stepped in to fill the role and played exceptionally well against Clark, as well as all of the Cougars' opponents with 19 kills, 18 digs and five ace serves. "Corinne played well against Clark and Malispina," said Woods. "Michelle wasn't 100 percent all day and we needed [Corinne] to come in and have individual 1997 FALL SPORTS CALENDAR spurts like that. She came in and rose to the occasion." McKinney injured her right thumb in the accident and was shaken up, but should be back up to speed soon. Kraljev and Felando were honored for their play in the Halloween Classic as they were both given All-Tournament awards. Clackamas plays host to the Linfield College's junior varsity squad tonight at 7 p.m. and then travels to Seattle to compete in the Shoreline Crossover tournament.
