Wednesday, May 28,1997 Letter to the Editor • The Emperor Has No Clothes Men stumble over the truth from time to time, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened. -Sir Winston Churchill If something is wrong, then it's wrong today, tomorrow and forever. No one can ever change the fact that on that day, at that time, it was wrong. If something is right, you can say it with confidence whenever and wherever you care to do so. Something is wrong. During our Environmental Week that ran May 19 through May 23, 1997, one of the booths was doing a land-office busi ness selling hemp jewelry, wallets with embroidered pot leaves, and bumper stickers advocating the use of mari juana. The banner on the front of the table stated "Sponsored by HEEL." The proprietor claimed the bag of pot seeds on display was legal because they had been irradiated. This was allowed to occur with the full faith and endorsement of the col lege administration, the Associated Student Government, campus secu rity, (and HEEL, according to the pusher). For the record, there is not odfe irra diation facility in the Northwest will-’ ing to irradiate anyone's marijuana, at any^pfice. I checked. Marijuana use is illegal everywhere, all the timet How could this occur at a publicly funded community college? This man was advocating using mari juana, and he's doing it in front of (for give me) young, impressionable people. To my friends and fellow students of Clackamas Community College: Shame on you! Where were you? Why didn't anyone do anything sooner? I refuse to believe that I am the most astute person (student or faculty) at this college. For everyone who saw this booth and formed the idea that marijuana use is no big deal, I say, "The emperor has no clothes." Robert P.
